The new Supergirl movie in the DC Universe is hinting at a major development for Krypto the Superdog. Starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, the film will follow a risky adventure based on a popular DC Comics storyline. However, some important details will be different from the original comic.
From the beginning, it’s been clear that the upcoming Supergirl movie draws heavily from the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book series. The film was originally going to share the comic’s name, but James Gunn, head of DC Studios, opted for simpler titles. Even so, the trailers show the movie is still strongly influenced by Woman of Tomorrow, while also hinting at a significant change to the character of Krypto.
Let’s break down Krypto the Super Dog’s original comic book story and how his part in the new Supergirl movie seems to be changing – and potentially improving upon it.
Krypto’s Role In DC’s Original Woman of Tomorrow Comic Explained
In Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic, Krypto the Super Dog is key to starting the whole story.
Kara, also struggling with the grief of losing Krypton by drinking on another planet, faces a serious crisis when Krypto is wounded by a poisoned arrow. This happens while they’re visiting a world with a red sun, which weakens their Kryptonian powers, and the attacker is a villain named Krem of the Yellow Hills.
Krypto was seriously injured and needed care while Kara went to find an antidote. She teamed up with a young Ruthye Marye Knoll, who was determined to avenge her family’s murder by a man named Krem. However, the comic later revealed Krypto wasn’t actually in critical condition when Kara and Ruthye left. Kara had simply told Ruthye she was on a mission to save Krypto, hoping to help Ruthye understand during their journey that revenge wouldn’t bring her true peace or heal her loss.
The newest trailer for the Supergirl movie hints that the film might be changing how it portrays the situation with Kara’s dog – whether he’s truly in danger or not.
The New Supergirl Trailer Suggests The Movie Won’t Have The Krypto Twist
The latest trailer for Supergirl shows Krypto the Super Dog in serious danger. He’s hit with a poisoned arrow by Krem, and it’s Ruthye Marye Knoll who informs Kara that the cure is held by a space pirate and their crew, the Brigands.
Similar to the situation with other characters, Supergirl has only three days to find Krypto before he’s gone, emphasizing the serious and urgent nature of his predicament. Given how popular Krypto the Super Dog was in the 2025 Superman movie, it seems unlikely James Gunn will allow him to die in the 2026 Supergirl film – unless he’s prepared for a major fan backlash.
It’s natural that Krypto faces greater danger in the new movie, as this heightens the suspense even for fans of the comic books. Similarly, the latest trailer for Supergirl hints that Kara Zor-El and Ruthey Marye Knoll will continue to learn and grow from each other, mirroring their relationship in the original story.
Supergirl releases in theaters on June 26th from DC Studios.
