Hallmark Channel fields its own K.C. football romance (not Taylor and Travis)
As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a soft spot for heartwarming holiday films and a penchant for football, I must say that Hallmark’s latest move to weave real-life romance into their Christmas TV movie lineup is a stroke of genius!
The Hallmark Channel is capitalizing on its connection to Kansas City, as well as the renowned relationship between musician Taylor Swift and athlete Travis Kelce, in an attempt to thrive during their profitable Christmas television movie period.
Over the past ten years or so, audiences have warmly welcomed the holiday-themed programming on the cable channel during their annual “Countdown to Christmas”. This includes numerous affordable films that start airing in mid-October, playing almost non-stop. On Saturdays, Hallmark is adding more options with “Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story” – one of two TV movies premiering this season, which were inspired by the real-life relationship between Swift and Kelce.
In a movie on the Hallmark Channel, Hunter King takes on the role of a young woman determined to aid her family in winning the “Fan of the Year” title for the Kansas City Chiefs. Along the way, she interacts with a team representative, portrayed by Tyler Hynes, who assesses the contestants. True to Hallmark’s style, a heartwarming connection develops between them.
Holiday Touchdown” is a collaboration between Hallmark and the Kansas City Chiefs, making the film explore in depth the genuine occurrence of multigenerational bonds strengthened by their mutual admiration for the Chiefs football team.
Last summer, the location for filming the movie encompassed the Kansas City region, which included GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium as one of its sites.
Hallmark, the card company, has long called Kansas City home.
In a September statement announcing the partnership, Mark Donovan, President of the Kansas City Chiefs, expressed heartfelt appreciation towards the entire Hallmark team and the distinctive alliance formed between our two brands and this movie, which he described as a special hometown collaboration.
Hallmark Media, which operates its television portfolio, is based in Studio City.
The film is adorned with red and golden hues, featuring appearances by several Kansas City Chiefs players, including their coach Andy Reid. Additionally, Donna Kelce, the mother of one such player, who has gained fame herself, plays a minor role in the movie. Last Friday, she was spotted alongside Taylor Swift, as they entered Arrowhead Stadium to watch the powerful Chiefs team defeat the Las Vegas Raiders.
Additionally, the film stars Jenna Bush Hager, Diedrich Bader, Megyn Price, Richard Riehle, Christine Ebersole, and Richard Christy as well.
Television Christmas films have proven to be a dependable and lucrative mainstay within the entertainment industry.
Multiple channels like Hallmark and Lifetime produce numerous holiday movies annually, aiming to match timeless classics such as “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” “Home Alone,” and “A Christmas Story” which are frequently aired on repeat.
Among the seasonal films offered by Hallmark, you’ll find titles such as “A Nineties Holiday”, “Sweet Sprinkling of Snow” (which could be interpreted as “Sugarplummed”), “Journey to a Star’s Nativity” (for “Following Yonder Star”) and “Merry Howl-idays”.
Just recently, rival network Lifetime premiered a holiday production that draws inspiration from the Swift-Kelce romance. Titled “Christmas in the Spotlight,” this new series features Jessica Lord portraying a pop star character who finds herself smitten with a football player, played by Laith Wallschleger, after an encounter at one of her concerts backstage.
