Anson Mount getting the first Star Trek role he tried out for would've ruined the franchise

As a seasoned gamer and Star Trek enthusiast with decades of fandom under my belt, I must confess that Anson Mount‘s portrayal of Captain Christopher Pike is nothing short of phenomenal. The man has breathed life into a role once held by legends like Leonard Nimoy and Patrick Stewart, and he’s done so with such conviction that it feels as if the character was tailor-made for him.

Anson Mount is an excellent casting choice for Star Trek. He skillfully portrays a complex yet hopeful character in Christopher Pike, making it seem as if the role were tailor-made for him. His performance mirrors that of esteemed actors like Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, and others who have mastered their roles in the past. Since Star Trek: Strange New Worlds debuted, he has been its standout performer (and was a highlight of Star Trek: Discovery during his tenure).

He truly has found the role of a lifetime. The role of Christopher Pike will forever be synonymous with Mount, even though he wasn’t the first person to play the role. However, things almost went against him and us as fans. Apparently, Mount wasn’t just up for the role of Pike in season two of Star Trek: Discovery. He was apparently trying to land the role of Gabriel Lorca in season one.

Lorca of course went to famed actor Jason Issacs, who’s pretty well known for playing villains (The Patriot, Harry Potter). So since Lorca ended up being a diabolical villain, he made perfect sense. Something Mount himself once said when he found out who he lost the role to.

Even if he aspired to play Lorca, securing that role might have prevented the transformation Star Trek underwent during its Nu Trek Era. This change could have been postponed or, in a worst-case scenario, it could have adversely affected the current era of Star Trek.

Mount’s first appearance on Discovery sparked anticipation for the series, and his involvement in Strange New Worlds has left fans eager. This enthusiasm has extended to new programs, revitalized seasons of existing ones, and overall boosted the entire franchise.

In a different scenario, if someone else had played Pike instead of Lorca, the outcome might not have been as it is now. Mount’s unique blend of compassion and optimism perfectly suits the new era of Star Trek we find ourselves in. With numerous shows and characters being dark and intense, Mount has brought a refreshing lightness to the franchise that was previously missing.

It’s possible that another person could have accomplished the task, but given how exceptionally Mount performed, it would be quite challenging to find someone else who could match his skill level. Moreover, attempting this task for the first time is already a narrow opening; even considering a replacement option further narrows the possibilities.

Mount not getting the role of Lorca turned around the franchise and we’re very thankful for that.
