As a huge fan of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, I always find myself thinking about how perfect the casting was across the board. Peter Jackson really nailed it, blending well-known actors with some fantastic lesser-known faces. While Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf and John Rhys-Davies as Gimli were brilliant choices, I think Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn was a stroke of pure genius. He just embodied everything Aragorn needed – the strength and skill of a leader, but also a real sense of humility that made you believe he was truly worthy of being king. He wasn’t just playing a character, he was Aragorn.
Recent reports suggest Leo Woodall, known for his role in the Netflix series Vladimir, is being considered to play Aragorn in the new Lord of the Rings spin-off, The Hunt for Gollum. Elijah Wood, who starred in the original Lord of the Rings films, has hinted that this casting is indeed happening during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
When the host pointed out the challenge of following in the footsteps of the previous actor who played Aragorn, Leo Woodall acknowledged it, saying, “Yes, that’s definitely true. It’s a big role to fill, but I think it’s going to be amazing.”
During a conversation, Wood appeared to briefly acknowledge something he said might not have been official, saying “that is true” before quickly adding, “those are tough boots.” He then confirmed reports about Kate Winslet joining the film, stating, “Well, she was announced.” He followed up by mentioning that if the character Frodo were to appear, it would make sense, implying a connection to Winslet’s potential role.

These comments suggest that Woody Wood will likely return to the film, as he’s previously said he’d like to. While his involvement wasn’t officially confirmed before, it now seems probable. Ian McKellen is also confirmed to be back as Gandalf, and Andy Serkis will once again play Gollum. In addition to acting, Serkis will also be directing the new spin-off movie.
Elijah Wood understands why fans feel so connected to him as Frodo, and he admits he’d be hesitant to let another actor take on the role while he’s still able to perform it. He shared with The Times that he’d also enjoy seeing a new generation experience the magic of Middle-earth, just like a fan, especially seeing familiar characters like Gandalf return to the screen. He anticipates the excitement of watching the story unfold again as a viewer.
The new movie will be set between the events of Bilbo’s 111th birthday – the beginning of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring – and Frodo’s arrival in Rivendell. This period focuses on Gandalf’s investigation of the ring and happens before Aragorn joins forces with the Hobbits.
