This is the one joke Disney asked Ryan Reynolds to remove from Deadpool & Wolverine
As a longtime comic book enthusiast who has watched Deadpool’s journey from the sidelines with bated breath, I must say that the latest installment, Deadpool & Wolverine, was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride of pure, unadulterated fun. Having grown up with these characters in my youth, it was heartening to see Ryan Reynolds and the team breathe new life into them, all while keeping the spirit of irreverence and anarchy that makes Deadpool so endearing.
After Disney purchased 21st Century Fox and gained control over film rights for franchises like X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool, there was speculation about the future of Deadpool, particularly with regard to the creative liberties given to Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, and the writing team. Although a third movie was confirmed, it remained uncertain how much leeway Disney would allow them in the creative process.
It seems that Disney showed some flexibility in this case. Not only did they approve the production of Deadpool & Wolverine as an R-rated movie, but they also granted them the liberty to resurrect and include characters from Fox’s former stable of superheroes.
The pairing of Deadpool and Wolverine received an R rating due to frequent intense violence, strong language, graphic content, and explicit sexual references. This is typical for Deadpool, but quite unusual for a Disney production.
In the film, there was an abundance of laugh-out-loud, astonishingly humorous scenes that left me taken aback. What caught me off guard was the explicit nature of the humor in the movie.
It turns out that a specific joke in the script was requested by Disney for removal by Ryan Reynolds. Back in August, Reynolds shared that there was one joke he was asked to omit, but he chose not to reveal the line then.
Initially, the humor in the movie wasn’t clear. Later, portions of the script were leaked online, revealing the original joke. Although I won’t share it here due to our family-focused environment, you can find it there instead.
Looking at the scene closely, it’s not unexpected that Disney asked Reynolds to edit out that part. With Reynolds repeatedly poking fun at Disney and Marvel in the movie, the reference to Mickey Mouse’s personal parts seems a bit excessive. There are certain subjects best left untouched, and this is clearly one of them.
Reynolds revealed that the Pinocchio was used as a replacement instead, and I think that’s actually a bit funnier given the expanding and retracting nose bit.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but marvel at the phenomenal success of Deadpool & Wolverine, raking in an impressive $1.34 billion globally at the box office. With such a resounding triumph under their belt, it’s clear that Disney must be thrilled to have granted Ryan Reynolds and his team the creative leeway to test those ratings limits, even if a single joke had to be trimmed.
