Meet Vito the Pug, the History-Making Winner of the 2024 National Dog Show
As a lifelong dog lover who has attended countless dog shows and even dabbled in breeding my own dogs, I must say that Vito the Pug’s victory at the 2024 National Dog Show is truly an outstanding achievement. Having witnessed the passion, dedication, and sheer determination of so many devoted canine enthusiasts over the years, I can attest to the fact that it takes more than just a pretty face to claim the title of “Best in Show.
At the 2024 National Dog Show, Vito the Pug earned the title “Best in Show,” making him the inaugural pug winner in over twenty years since the event started being televised.
As an ardent dog enthusiast, I find myself awestruck by Vito’s remarkable achievements. This two-and-a-half-year-old canine prodigy, hailing from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, outshone a staggering 1,940 other contenders at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pennsylvania.
Vito first won the “Toy Group” category, where he competed against 24 other breeds.
In another part of the competition, a Welsh Terrier named Verde was recognized as Reserve Best in Show. Other competitors vying for the top spot included a giant schnauzer, a Clumber spaniel, a Lhasa apso, a Berger Picard, and an Ibizan hound. The contestants were evaluated based on their overall appearance, behavior, and conformation according to the official standards of their respective breeds.
Since its debut as the Kennel Club of Philadelphia Dog Show in 1879, the National Dog Show has been held annually since 1933, according to NBC. This televised event has consistently featured John O’Hurley and David Frei as hosts since it first aired in 2002.
Vito’s caretaker, Michael Scott, praised the pug, noting its “stunning head and facial features,” referring to it as a “well-built” dog with “graceful movements.
Apart from Scott, many others were also rejoicing over Vito’s triumph. Mary Carillo, a sports analyst and retired tennis pro who recently joined the broadcast team this season, inquired whether the pup was aware of his victory, observing that he seemed rather self-satisfied.
“He’s very smug,” agreed Scott. “I think he knows.”
