Dwayne Johnson reveals if he's wearing a bodysuit for live-action Moana movie

As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s transformation into Maui for the upcoming live-action Moana is nothing short of impressive!

Despite his impressive size, Dwayne Johnson needs some assistance to portray the colossal demigod Maui in the upcoming live-action Moana film, as it seems even The Rock isn’t quite that massive for the role.

It appears that the images of Johnson portraying Maui show him donning a bodysuit to fully embody the character. There had been speculation about this, but now the actor himself has verified it.

During the promotion of Moana 2, Extra inquired from Dwayne Johnson, who transitioned from WWE wrestling to acting stardom, if he added muscle mass for his role. Despite already possessing colossal muscles, Johnson disclosed that they are utilizing a bodysuit’s assistance.

Johnson shared that the suit he’s wearing required a lot of time to get into. Thus, it makes him really pleased you mentioned ‘you bulked up’, as it indicates you didn’t notice.

Johnson also commented on the leaked photos from the set, saying: “It takes a few hours each day to apply that makeup. We were filming outside, and when those images appeared, I thought, ‘Oh no, we’ve been found out!’ because we had constructed barriers to keep paparazzi away. However, they managed to sneak in boats and take photos. But I’m glad you enjoyed the sneak peek. I can hardly wait! The movie will be released in 2026.

The bodysuit doesn’t merely aid in muscle support; it also facilitates the process of replicating Maui’s distinctive Neo-Polynesian Tribal tattoos.

In 2016, Johnson made his debut voicing the character Maui in the animated movie “Moana.” This initial release, featuring Auli‘i Cravalho as Moana’s voice, earned approximately $644 million worldwide and was one of the most watched streamed films in the U.S. during 2022.

In April 2023, Johnson announced plans for a live-action adaptation of Moana, and it was subsequently confirmed in June that he would reprise his role for the film. However, Auli‘i Cravalho will not be returning as Moana. Instead, the role of the title character, the adventurous teenager, is being played by 17-year-old Catherine Laga’aia.

In 2026, you’ll find the real-life adaptation of “Moana” hitting the big screen. Until then, families can catch “Moana 2” in cinemas this weekend. The sequel initially conceived as a Disney+ series later transformed into a cinema release film, despite not receiving fantastic reviews, it has still managed to break box office records.
