Inside Stephen Mulhern's year from hell: From health battles and mystery medical procedure to beloved father's death as TV host is rushed to hospital after collapsing at Pizza Express

As I delve deeper into the colorful world of Stephen Mulhern, it’s quite evident that his journey has been as vibrant and entertaining as his TV shows. From In For A Penny to You Bet!, he’s proven himself to be a versatile entertainer who can bring joy to both young and old audiences alike.

He is one of ITV’s top favourite presenters, fronting Deal Or No Deal, co-hosting Dancing On Ice and appearing alongside Ant and Dec on the iconic Saturday Night Takeaway.

Despite being out of view, Stephen Mulhern has been going through a challenging year marked by unexpected health concerns, property troubles, and the heartbreaking loss of his father.

This past week, I myself found myself unexpectedly admitted to the hospital, a consequence that unfolded after undergoing a medical treatment earlier in the day, and subsequently collapsing during dinner at a Pizza Express establishment.

Following assistance from paramedics, Stephen was connected via phone to his mother to reassure her that he was in good condition.

Additionally, he has been deeply affected by the passing of his father, Christopher. It’s a difficult and trying time for him.

As Stephen is getting better after this week’s health issue, let’s revisit his tumultuous year that felt like a nightmare.

Health Woes

Initially, Stephen caused worry when he withdrew from Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway in April due to falling ill.

It’s said that he informed the producers during the early hours of Saturday, before the scheduled shooting, that he wasn’t in the mood to perform on the show that night because he was unwell.

During his absence from the show, details about his illness weren’t disclosed. However, a source near to Stephen shared with The Sun on Sunday that ‘Stephen had been scheduled for a brief segment on the program, but unfortunately, he wasn’t well enough to appear.’

On Saturday morning, as soon as he understood that he wouldn’t feel well enough to attend, he phoned the team immediately to inform them of his absence.

‘They were able to rejig the format and make it work without him.’

A spokesperson for Stephen informed TopMob earlier that he had been scheduled to appear in one of tonight’s skits, but unfortunately, he couldn’t participate because he wasn’t feeling well. He’s excited to return for the finale next weekend.

In the year 2022, Stephen took a brief hiatus from TV broadcasting, as he had a medical operation followed by the advice of his doctors to take it easy and rest.

In a recent tweet, he greeted everyone by saying: “Hey there! I’ve been less active here lately and I appreciate every one of your warm messages. I’ve taken some time off to rest as advised by the doctor.

I’m making progress and feeling great about it! I can’t wait to return to work shortly. For now, I plan on relaxing and enjoying this evening’s Saturday Night Takeaway with everyone else.

On Wednesday evening, about 8 PM, a situation at Pizza Express prompted the call of an ambulance due to concerns raised by the staff regarding his health. This incident was his latest hospital-related incident.

To ensure safety measures, he was transported from Sunningdale, Berkshire, to Frimley Park Hospital located in Camberley, Surrey, following a medical examination by paramedics.

Following assistance from paramedics, Stephen phoned his mom, Maureen, to reassure her that he’s fine, currently at home recuperating, and deeply embarrassed about the dramatic response he exhibited due to the anesthetic in public.

According to our source, he underwent a procedure on Wednesday. After receiving the anesthesia, he had a few drinks, which caused him to feel ill.

Father’s Death

Despite Stephen’s profound secrecy regarding his personal affairs, it emerged this week that his father, Christopher, has sadly passed away.

According to a representative, Stephen has been going through a particularly challenging period lately. The loss of his dear father has affected him deeply and caused significant stress.

Stephen hails from east London, where he was born in the year 1977. His parents, Christopher and Maureen, were both market vendors for a living.

The celebrity attributed his achievements to his parents by stating: “They may find this sentimental, but they tirelessly labored to raise me and my three siblings.

Growing up with three other siblings, he developed his social abilities working at their family market stand. Later in life, he followed his passion for magic and built a career around it.

Property Issues

Additionally, Stephen has experienced tension related to one of his rental properties due to tenants asserting that they’ve endured dampness and mold for a prolonged period.

In a situation involving a property valued at approximately £4 million, owned by the presenter’s company, he found himself obliged to offer an apology to the tenants residing there. This was due to their statements expressing feelings of resentment and exclusion, as their concerns, raised over a period of two to three years, had been disregarded.

Images captured by The Big Issue reveal that the revamped bungalow exhibits walls stained with moisture and mold. The occupants, who include an essential worker throughout the pandemic, reported that these conditions negatively impacted their emotional well-being.

Stephen said he had no idea about how bad the flats were and is ‘absolutely mortified’.

He stated that he hired an external property management firm to oversee the property, assuring us he’d address the necessary repairs promptly.

It was refurbished and rented out to the tenant and a flatmate, who pay £775 a month.

Previously, the tenants identified issues related to moisture and mold growth within their rental property. During a review conducted by the managing agency, Connells, several years back, they brought this problem to their attention.

They said: ‘The agent merely recommended that we ventilate properly and keep the house warm during the winter. We did, but the damp gradually worsened. We remained patient, sending polite emails at first. In later conversations, my remarks became a bit sharper.’

One of the tenants slammed Mr Mulhern as ‘a millionaire, profiting off our misery’

I strongly dislike the apparent lack of concern shown by Stephen Mulhern, Jas Athwal, and others who are similar in this regard. They are all connected to a system that unfortunately views tenants as mere sources of revenue rather than people with needs and rights.

In October, a representative for Stephen shared with TopMob that he was deeply embarrassed to discover the situation and the distressing ordeal the tenant had endured, which is undeniably unsuitable.

Stephen wasn’t informed about any of these matters because he entrusts a separate business, responsible for managing the property, with full authority over it.

Without prior knowledge about the problem, Stephen promptly took action himself by reaching out directly to request a team of mold and ventilation experts to inspect the property. This is because he considers it important to address these issues swiftly.

We’ve reached out to the tenant to offer our heartfelt apologies for any inconvenience or annoyance they may have experienced while managing this situation.

‘The quality is far from what Stephen usually demands, but he’s making every effort to rectify this immediately, and the corrective measures are currently being implemented.’

Axed Show

Stephen suffered another blow after his beloved ITV show In For A Penny was axed in July.

As reported by The Mirror, an unexpected move led to the temporary halt of the popular Saturday night game show after completing six seasons. However, the powers-that-be have left open the possibility for a future revival.

According to a source from ITV, while Stephen is engrossed in filming other projects this summer, ITV still holds “In For A Penny” in high regard as a cherished format.

Hold onto your change for now, since the group might soon appear in your hometown, inviting more people to join their unusual and zany contests in the days ahead!

Nevertheless, Stephen will join forces with Holly Willoughby to co-present the comeback of ITV’s gameshow You Bet!, where everyday folks face off against extraordinary tasks.

In this show, we have an illustrious panel of celebrities such as comedian Rob Beckett, Alison Hammond, and Olly Murs. For each task presented to the contestants, our star-studded panel, along with the audience in the studio, will place a bet on whether the challengers can accomplish it – Will they say YES or NO?

Stephen often responds with enthusiasm: “Whenever anyone asks me if there’s a show I could potentially revive, I always say yes, without hesitation.

“Now, both young viewers experiencing the series for the first time and older fans looking to revisit their nostalgia can enjoy this updated version of the classic show.
