Why Kate Hudson and brother Oliver turned down Kurt Russell’s adoption offer

Why Kate Hudson and brother Oliver turned down Kurt Russell's adoption offer

As a child of a blended family, I have always admired the unique dynamics and decisions made by my fellow siblings from different mothers. The story of Oliver Hudson and Kate turning down Kurt Russell’s offer to adopt them is an inspiring testament to their wisdom beyond their years. They recognized the love they already had and chose not to disrupt the family structure that had nurtured them for so long.

If Oliver Hudson and his sister Kate had accepted their stepfather’s generous proposal, they could have been recognized by another name.

On Tuesday, the siblings who starred in a Skims holiday ad discussed the topic on their Sibling Revelry podcast.

Oliver, 48, explained why he and Kate, 45, turned down Kurt Russell’s offer to adopt them.

The actor mentioned that his father, Bill Hudson (aged 75), was briefly in his life before leaving, as he shared about his relationship with his dad who was married to his mother Goldie Hawn (aged 79) from 1976 to 1982.

He said, “Our relationship is strong now, but it required a considerable amount of time, more than you might imagine, for us to reach this point.

In Oliver’s words, ‘Kurt entered my world when I was around six years old, and in essence, he brought me up. The person you see before you today is largely a result of his influence.’

“There was a moment when he asked us, myself and Kate, if we wanted to be adopted, and we said no.’

‘Not that we were — you know, very aware of probably what it even f–king meant,’ he continued.

Back then, there were around six or twelve of us, and I can’t recall our exact ages, but we simply replied, “We don’t require any more; love is already present among us.

Russell, 72, began seeing Hawn in 1983 while they were working on the film Swing Shift.

They welcomed their son Wyatt, 38, in 1986.

The couple, who have been together for more than 40 years never married.

During an interview with Chris Wallace on Who’s Talking, the Academy Award recipient shared that they chose not to remarry due to a mutual desire to avoid another divorce.

Russell was married to actress Season Hubley from 1979-1983, and they share a son, Boston, 44.

‘When it doesn’t work out, it ends up to be big business,’ Hawn told the interviewer.

‘It’s always ugly. Somebody actually has to take a look and say, “How many divorces actually are fun? How many divorces actually don’t cost money? How many divorces actually make you hate the person more than you did before? How many divorces have hurt children?”‘

The Christmas Chronicles star said she likes making the choice to be in a relationship.

Hawn expressed that she finds appealing the concept of having the freedom to decide each day whether or not to stay, by waking up in the morning and making those choices.

‘I mean relationships are hard,’ she stated.

‘Navigating them can be challenging at times. We encounter various obstacles and have differing opinions. Yet, there are certain beliefs we share.’

‘I believe it’s crucial to remain self-reliant and original in thoughts. That way, you preserve your individuality and experience the unique sensation of being true to yourself.’
