A look back at I’m A Celebrity star Tulisa’s X Factor feud with Gary Barlow which propelled her to new heights of fame – as singer returns to the spotlight while battling critters in the jungle
As I delve into the captivating narrative of Tulisa Contostavlos, a woman whose life has been a whirlwind of fame, scandal, and personal growth, I find myself in awe of her resilience and tenacity. Born into the spotlight, she was thrust onto the global stage at an incredibly young age with N-Dubz, and later as a judge on The X Factor UK. Yet, it was her tumultuous journey following her stint on the show that truly defined her spirit.
In their time working together on The X Factor, Tulisa Contostavlos had a heated disagreement or argument with Gary Barlow.
As I, a diehard Dappy fan, eagerly watch from my couch, I can’t help but feel a rush of excitement as the one and only Tulisa Contostavlos, age 36, bravely confronts critters and an assortment of other jungle nuisances in this latest season of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! The anticipation is killing me!
However, several years prior to braving her fears in the jungle, she had encountered the anger of the renowned singer-songwriter, aged 53, who publicly criticized her for her “cigarette smoke breath” during a live broadcast, an incident that left her deeply embarrassed.
During the years 2011-2012, at only 23 years old, Tulisa secured a significant position as a judge on the X Factor. She shared this panel with Gary, Kelly Rowland, and Louis Walsh.
Furthermore, not only did she secure her initial series victory as part of girl group Little Mix, but her experience on the show was marked by certain disputes. One particularly memorable instance involved a heated exchange between her and Gary Bubbles in 2012.
Despite the controversy that marked my initial tenure as a judge, it unexpectedly catapulted me into an even broader spotlight after my days with the renowned hip-hop trio. Little did I know, this feud would introduce me to a fresh wave of admirers, Tulisa.
On a Saturday evening, there was a heated argument among the musical celebrities, following Tulisa’s criticism of Gary over the song he had selected for his contestant Christopher Maloney. She expressed her disapproval by saying: “Gary, it seems like you’re allowing him to continuously ruin these ’80s hits?
After listening to Tulisa, Gary, evidently giving thought to his reply, responded by saying, “What I find most upsetting – your words or that cigarette smell?
Everyone, including Tulisa, was just as stunned by Gary’s unexpected remark. She sat there with her mouth wide open, processing the words he had spoken.
However, during the conversation between host Dermot O’Leary and Christopher after their performance, Tulisa interjected, remarking to Gary, “By the way, cut back on the red wine, I can definitely detect its scent.
Later, during an interview on The Xtra Factor on ITV2, Barlow was questioned about having consumed red wine. He admitted to taking a small taste of it in his dressing room before offering an apology to his fellow judge.
He expressed: “May I genuinely apologize to Tulisa? From now on throughout the series, feel free to express yourself personally towards me, even if it involves criticisms or insults.
Tulisa shared with The Xtra Factor that Barlow admitted to loving the scent of cigarettes, as it brought back memories of his smoking days, a claim which Barlow confirmed.
But when asked if she had accepted Gary’s apology, Tulisa replied: ‘No, not yet.’
Nevertheless, it became known later that Gary spent a considerable amount of time in Tulisa’s dressing room, offering an apology. Eventually, Tulisa forgave him.
A confidant shared with Metro earlier that following the performance, Gary made his way to Tulisa’s private space and spent a considerable amount of time expressing his apologies to her. He acknowledges his inappropriate behavior and deeply regrets having said those words to her.
While another insider added: ‘Tulisa was really angry but eventually accepted his apology.
Gary deeply regrets what he said, as his words were not well considered. They slipped out impulsively, not reflecting his true intentions.
Afterward, Tulisa playfully turned the tables on herself by wearing a nicotine patch and jokingly mocking herself during her appearance at the results show.
Regardless of the playful prank she pulled off, it seems that Tulisa and Gary were unable to completely patch things up after their dispute. The source claims that Tulisa has never been able to forgive him for his remark.
A year after their altercation, Gary made a parting remark towards Tulisa, expressing that he felt ‘happy’ or ‘pleased’ she was no longer on the X Factor.
In 2013, Sharon Osbourne, a former judge, was rehired for the popular ITV show after Tulisa left following a two-year stint. During her time on the show, she guided the group Little Mix to win in 2011.
After the news broke out, Gary stated on Sunday’s Sun that the judging panel was invigorated following the comeback of fiery Sharon, who had been away for six years.
When inquired about his satisfaction with the revised team composition, he affirmed positively, stating, “Absolutely, yes, without a doubt. Sharon’s breath improvement is noticeable!
When a person isn’t feeling content or at ease, it impacts everyone around them. Frankly, I was half-happy when things concluded last year, and learning that Sharon would return made me feel somewhat relieved.
However, although her debut series was tarnished by its aftermath, it surprisingly catapulted her to unprecedented levels of popularity that she hadn’t anticipated.
Last year, she shared with The Guardian her unexpected encounter with fame: ‘I hadn’t anticipated such intense celebrity status, and it took me by complete surprise.’
Approximately a decade has passed, and Tulisa now finds herself once again under the public eye, bravely confronting her apprehensions within the I’m A Celebrity jungle.
More recently, the star confessed that returning to television following a decade-long absence, triggered by a drug scandal orchestrated by the notorious Fake Sheikh, has filled her with overwhelming fear. This incident led her to contemplate suicide.
As I eagerly anticipate my return to the small screen, I can’t help but reflect on the past. Let me tell you, there’s no experience in that jungle as harrowing as what I went through back in 2013.
Mazher Mahmood, often called “The Fake Sheikh,” who previously worked as a journalist for The Sun on Sunday, was sentenced to 15 months in prison for obstructing justice. He deceived Tulisa into purchasing cocaine for him by pretending to be a film producer.
After appearing on the steps of Southwark Crown Court in 2014, feeling both vindicated and condemning the ‘horrific entrapment’ by Mahmood, Tulisa has mainly stayed away from the limelight, with a notable exception being an N-Dubz tour in 2022.
Discussing her upcoming stint in the I’m a Celebrity jungle on Sunday, she expressed: “Whenever I ponder, ‘This is going to be tough,’ I remind myself, ‘I’ve managed before, I can do it again.’
Later on, I found myself right at the heart of the matter, truth be told, appearing on TV once more feels like an awkward predicament that I’d rather avoid.
For the last eleven years, it seems as though I’ve been going through a continuous healing process. This has been ongoing since the challenges that came with X Factor, the trial, and everything else that followed.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I must confess that achieving my goals feels incomplete until I tackle the final hurdle – the apprehension that has long lingered within me, particularly about appearing on television. On days like today, when the anxiety is absent, I can almost taste the sense of accomplishment. Yet, overall, this fear has held a significant place in my journey, and vanquishing it would be the crowning achievement.
After battling Gary and emerging victorious from her drug scandal, Tulisa is fully embracing jungle living. She has confronted her fears with the recent Bushtucker Trial, ‘Shock Around The Clock.’
In an unexpected turn of events, despite her anticipations, she ended up receiving less than desired results, as she scored only five out of twelve stars. This predicament unfolded when she was fastened within the confines of a colossal clock’s second hand, being spun around, and finding herself drenched in various jungle creatures.
