MasterChef’s statement in full after Gregg Wallace, 60, steps down from the BBC show amid investigation into allegations he ‘made inappropriate sexual jokes and insults to female staff’
As a long-time devotee of MasterChef, I must admit that this news has left me rather stunned. Gregg Wallace, a figure who has been a constant companion during my evening meals for years, is stepping back from the show. The allegations of misconduct are certainly troubling, and as a fan, it’s hard not to feel a sense of disillusionment.
MasterChef have issued a statement announcing Gregg Wallace will be stepping back from the show.
The choice was made following an examination initiated over past accusations of misbehavior, which encompassed supposedly improper sexual remarks.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’m thrilled to share that the already-recorded episodes of MasterChef: The Professionals are all set to air as scheduled on BBC One, with our esteemed judge, Gregg, gracing our screens throughout December.
Meanwhile, as Gregg, aged 60, remains silent, the show’s production company, Banijay, issued a statement on Thursday.
Read their statement in full:
This week, Banijay UK acknowledged receiving personal complaints about historical accusations of misbehavior involving presenter Gregg Wallace during filming for one of their shows on the BBC.
Since these complainants haven’t personally brought their concerns to our show producers or Banijay UK, we believe it’s essential to initiate an immediate, unbiased investigation by an external party, to thoroughly examine the matter.
During the ongoing review, Gregg Wallace has decided to take a break from his duties on MasterChef. He’s fully dedicated to participating in the process as required.
At Banijay UK, we consistently prioritize the welfare of our staff, and we make it a point to explicitly outline our conduct expectations for both cast and crew in every production. We ensure these guidelines are understood by providing numerous channels for voicing concerns, some of which even allow for anonymity. These avenues for communication are visibly communicated on set.
Although these claims stem from history, any instances that come to our notice where the specified standards aren’t upheld, are meticulously investigated and dealt with in an appropriate manner.
If you have anything you’d like to discuss with us, whether it’s questions, problems, or just thoughts, feel free to reach out at speakup@banijayuk.com. Your communication will be kept confidential.
The BBC has said it takes any issues that are raised with it ‘seriously’.
A representative from the BBC stated, “We give careful attention to any concerns brought to our notice and have strong systems set up to address them effectively.
We firmly stand against any actions that don’t meet our set standards as per the BBC, and we won’t accept such behaviors.
In situations where an individual works directly for an external production company, we collaborate with them in addressing any issues or concerns that may arise, providing full support throughout the process.
It hasn’t been made clear what the accusations are, but last month there were reports suggesting that the former grocer-turned-TV personality bragged about his personal relationships and exposed himself to a junior BBC employee who is a woman of younger age.
In October, Gregg firmly refuted allegations that he had made sexually inappropriate remarks towards women. He emphasized that he would never engage in flirting or making advances towards other women and clarified, “I did not make any sexual comments.
In the very same month, the speaker openly acknowledged that he was under stress due to accusations suggesting he had made inappropriate sexual remarks towards women.
The chef shared a live video on Instagram, providing advice about healthy eating alongside hints regarding recent accusations leveled against him over the past week.
He told viewers he was ‘a little bit distracted at the moment’, but said he ‘wanted to check in and say hello’.
Gregg has been co-presenter and judge of the BBC cooking show MasterChef, with John since 2005.
In 2016, the MasterChef judge tied the knot with his fourth spouse, Anne-Marie Sterpini (age 37, affectionately known as Anna), at Hever Castle in Kent.
