The 1978 animated Lord of the Rings movie is coming to streaming!
As a cinephile who has spent countless nights huddled under the dim light of my projector screen, I can confidently say that Ralph Bakshi’s 1978 adaptation of “The Lord of the Rings” holds a special place in my heart. It’s not often that a film manages to blend humor with epic storytelling quite as seamlessly as this one does – case in point, Gandalf’s random scares of Sam. And let’s not forget the unique rotoscoping animation style that sets it apart from its live-action counterparts.
When considering adaptations of “The Lord of the Rings,” it’s hard not to first think of Peter Jackson’s groundbreaking live-action trilogy. This trilogy garnered numerous Oscars, with “The Return of the King” notably winning the prestigious Best Picture award. The Middle-earth universe expanded further with the subsequent “The Hobbit” trilogy, and more recently, Amazon Prime Video’s prequel series, “The Rings of Power,” has been experiencing great success.
Before the live-action adaptations that came later, in 1978, Ralph Bakshi brought his own animated film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s renowned book series to life. However, this movie, titled “Lord of the Rings,” wasn’t without its disputes; it only covered “The Fellowship of the Rings” and parts of “The Two Towers.” Despite these incompletenesses, I personally find it enchanting. It’s filled with unexpected comic moments, such as when Gandalf scares Sam for no apparent reason at all. Moreover, its animation style is quite distinct. It employs rotoscoping, a technique that combines animation and live-action.
Among all animated adaptations of J.R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, Ralph Bakshi’s “Lord of the Rings” (1978) undoubtedly stands out as the most successful. Although there have been others, like “The Hobbit” (1977) and “The Return of the King” (1980), the latter is frequently confused with an actual sequel to the 1978 film.
For fans of Middle-earth enchanted by the classic movie, it might be challenging to locate it. I personally own it on VHS, but that’s quite outdated in today’s media consumption landscape. However, great news! Starting December 1, the movie will start streaming on Max. Unfortunately, this doesn’t apply to viewers in the UK as Max is yet to be accessible there for some unknown reason. As a workaround, you can rent the film on Prime Video.
2024 will see the return of Middle-earth in animated form, as I eagerly anticipate the premiere of “The War of the Rohirrim”, a prequel to “Lord of the Rings” set for release on December 13. This upcoming movie definitely looks promising!
