Disney’s sequel to Wizards of Waverly Place is ending after one more season. The news comes six months after the show’s second season concluded, signaling a decline in its popularity.
According to reports, Wizards of Waverly Place will end after its third season. Production for the final season begins next week, and Selena Gomez is confirmed to return as Alex Russo in several episodes. She’ll also be making her debut as a director, leading the filming of the season’s first episode.
Selena Gomez Returns in the Final Season
Selena Gomez, originally a star on Wizards of Waverly Place, has appeared less frequently in the new series. She made guest appearances during the first two seasons, but the show now centers on an adult Justin Russo (David Henrie) who mentors a new wizard, Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown). The cast also includes Alkaio Thiele as Justin’s son, Roman; Max Matenko as Roman’s brother, Milo; and Mimi Gianopulos as Giada, Justin’s wife and the mother of Roman and Milo.
In Season 3, Billie is still heartbroken over Alex’s disappearance. She soon learns that the key to saving her mother lies with her estranged father, and she must reconnect with him. As the Russo family works together to find Alex, Billie discovers their combined strength might be the only way to overcome the dangerous forces they’re facing.
Todd J. Greenwald created Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. Gomez and Henrie are executive producers, along with Jed Elinoff, Scott Thomas, Gary Marsh, Jonas Agin, Rick Williams, and Andy Fickman. Greenwald, Elinoff, and Thomas also write for the series.
The Original Show Lasted Four Seasons
Wizards of Waverly Place originally aired from 2007 to 2012 and lasted for four seasons, creating over a hundred episodes. Selena Gomez starred as Alex, a young wizard navigating life with her brothers, Justin and Max. The show generally focused on Alex trying to conceal her magical abilities as they grew stronger throughout the series. In the final episode, Alex won a wizard competition, earning full control of her family’s powers.
Henrie shared that he’s incredibly grateful for the positive response to the series and excited to continue creating magical content for both new and original fans, offering a heartwarming experience for everyone.
Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is streaming on Disney+. Season 3 does not yet have a premiere date.
