British film board slaps Ariana Grande blockbuster Wicked with a trigger warning over discrimination against ‘green-skinned’ people and persecuted ‘talking animals’
As a lifestyle expert with a rich background in cinema and social issues, I find myself both intrigued and somewhat perplexed by the recent developments surrounding the blockbuster film Wicked. Having spent countless hours immersed in various cinematic universes, I’ve come to appreciate the art of storytelling that transcends racial, gender, and species boundaries.
The British Film Classification Board has added a content advisory notice to the popular film, Wicked, concerning its depiction of discrimination towards a character with green skin and the mistreatment of anthropomorphic animal characters.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but express my excitement over this upcoming movie musical! It’s not just any ordinary film; it’s a prequel to the timeless 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz,” delving into the untold tales of two iconic characters – the enigmatic Wicked Witch of the West and the graceful Glinda the Good. I simply can’t wait to unravel their stories!
In a nutshell, the storyline of Wicked revolves around an unusual bond that forms between Elphaba, a misjudged green-skinned character portrayed by Cynthia Erivo, and Glinda, a well-liked wealthy girl, whose role is played by Ariana Grande.
However, though the well-known green witch character in the narrative is central, the British Film Classification Board has issued a warning about potential discrimination in the beloved musical.
According to the advisory from the BBFC, a female character with green skin is subjected to ridicule, mistreatment, and public embarrassment due to her skin tone.
In the enchanting realm of Oz, I’ve found myself surrounded by an array of imaginary beings – from the diminutive Munchkins, who are as cheerful as they are small, to the awe-inspiring flying monkeys that glide through the skies, and even speaking goats that add a touch of humor to this magical land.
The film industry’s classification board didn’t overlook this; they deemed it necessary to caution viewers about a fictional world where talking animals face persecution.
The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), led by TV host Natasha Kalpinsky, recommended that parents should guide their children as they watch this film, assigning it a PG rating.
In a twist of events, the production titled “Wicked,” with an approximate budget of £120 million, has faced allegations that it’s transforming the enchanting world of Oz into a more socially and politically aware one.
In the 1939 movie, they cast little people as Munchkins, but in the 2024 version, the inhabitants at the beginning of the Yellow Brick Road in the Land of Oz have a distinctly altered appearance.
In the latest cinematic extravaganza, the Munchkin roles are headed by Ethan Slater, boyfriend of Grande, who projects an appealing image with his curly-haired portrayal of Boq.
Throughout the global media circuit for the movie, the director of the fresh release has shared insights as to why he opted for a completely distinct visual style when depicting beloved characters within this new movie adaptation.
45-year-old filmmaker Chu expressed: “Our intention was for [Boq] to originate from a specific culture, and we aimed to redefine what a Munchkin character represents. In our perspective, being a Munchkin wasn’t about size.” (GQ magazine interview)
He added: “We constructed Munchkinland with a peculiar touch, resembling a character who had red hair and fair complexion.
Fans have taken notice of the fiery red hair shared among Boq and other Oz locals, as one fan put it on X this week: “Is anyone else curious about why almost everyone in Munchkinland seems to be a redhead?
others pointed out that the location where the Munchkins reside has undergone a significant transformation, suggesting: ‘It’s hard to comprehend how the Wicked film turned Munchkinland into a trendy neighborhood.’
As a lifestyle expert, I’m sharing some intriguing insights from the latest annual report of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The report indicates a significant surge in complaints – the highest in four years, no less! This spike can be attributed to young movie enthusiasts expressing their frustration over not being granted access to films they’re keen on watching.
2023 saw a grand total of 148 complaints lodged regarding the company’s ‘classification decisions’, as detailed in the latest report.
This was more than the 84 in 2022, the 109 from 2021 and the 93 in 2020, but less than 149 in 2019.
The most complained about issue was the film body’s decision to give US horror thriller Five Nights at Freddy’s, based on a video game, a 15 age-rating.
