Before he made gumbo, Brock Peters was an admiral in Star Trek

As a lifelong Star Trek enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a sense of profound respect for Brock Peters. His versatility and range as an actor, spanning from the hallowed grounds of Maycomb County to the far reaches of the galaxy, is nothing short of astounding.

To devotees of a specific generation, Brock Peters was commonly known as Joseph Sisko – a skilled chef renowned for his delicious cuisine from his New Orleans restaurant. He was the father of Captain Benjamin Sisko from Deep Space Nine and played a significant role in instilling the same strong moral values in his son that viewers admired. Although he only had a minor part on the show, Brock Peters’ portrayal of Joseph Sisko earned him recognition as one of the most memorable side characters in Star Trek lore by many fans.

For Peters, known for portraying Tom Robinson in the live-action adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird, his journey in Star Trek didn’t begin with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Similar to numerous other actors associated with Star Trek, Robinson became part of the franchise well before Deep Space Nine. Intriguingly, he is one of the select few within the Star Trek community who has played two distinct characters in two separate eras of the franchise.

Previously, he played Fleet Admiral Cartwright in both Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. In these films, his character was Benjamin Sisko’s father before taking on that role in Deep Space Nine. His part might have been minor, but it offered a subtle contrast to the main events happening at the time, particularly in The Undiscovered Country.

He was a character that had a lot of meat on the bones, with the Section 31 novel (2001) revealing that he was a member of Starfleet’s shadow organization. With the new Section 31 film right around the corner, it’s interesting that Cartwright could’ve been a member of that organization and then a Starfleet Fleet Admiral.

Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed, there’s a possibility that the upcoming movie might delve into Cartwright’s past involvement with the organization. Given that the movie is set in an era when he would likely be a member, we could learn more about his character background.
