Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Michael Dorn is “slowly but surely retiring”
As a long-time Star Trek enthusiast with decades of fandom under my belt, I must admit that the news about Michael Dorn’s retirement brings a mix of emotions. On one hand, it’s heartening to see an actor who has given so much to the franchise step back and enjoy life after such a long career. After all, Worf is not just a character; he’s been a part of my Star Trek family since the 80s!
Michael Dorn, known for his role in Star Trek since its inception with Star Trek: The Next Generation back in 1987, was last seen on the third season of Star Trek: Picard. With a record-breaking number of appearances in the Star Trek universe, this might soon change as Dorn himself hinted at retirement during an interview for Star Trek Explorer Magazine. [as reported by Trekmovie]
For those Star Trek enthusiasts who were eagerly awaiting a Star Trek: Legacy series and looking forward to more covert missions involving Worf and Raffi (played by Michelle Hurd), this isn’t pleasant news. However, given his long-standing career that stretches back to the 1960s, when he graced the screen on Days of Our Lives, Dorn certainly has earned a well-deserved retirement.
Luckily, though Dorn suggests he might be retiring, it doesn’t mean he wouldn’t consider reprising his role as Worf if everything fell into place perfectly. However, he made it clear that “a lot needs to happen for Worf to return.” Currently, he isn’t fully retired yet, but he mentioned he’s no longer tied down to actively seeking new work, saying he’s “off the treadmill now.” Nevertheless, he expressed interest in continuing to write and develop future projects.
Dorn, who has previously declined several opportunities to reprise his role as Worf in Star Trek: Discovery, won’t be making an appearance without meeting specific conditions first. After all, he was instrumental in crafting and growing this character from a mere blueprint into a cherished Star Trek figure. Therefore, it’s only natural that he would have certain stipulations before putting on the prosthetics once more.
You might find it interesting to delve deeper into Michael Dorn’s perspectives regarding Worf and his retirement, as discussed in Star Trek Explorer #13. This issue can be found at newsstands, comic book shops, or directly from Titan Books now.
