As a dedicated follower of Marlo Thomas’s journey through life, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of empathy as she navigates the challenging waters of grief following the loss of her beloved husband Phil Donahue. Having been married for 44 years and sharing a love that was evident to all who knew them, it’s heartbreaking to see such an iconic couple part ways in this manner.

On Monday, Marlo Thomas was absent from the Today Show’s St. Jude’s special for the first time in 21 years, as she still grieves over the passing of her husband, Phil Donahue.

Donahue died aged 88 in August – he and the Friends actress, 87, were married for 44 years.

Thomas, the National Outreach Director at the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (founded by his father Danny Thomas in 1962), missed the yearly segment on The Today Show that kicks off their Thanks & Giving campaign.

This morning, Tony Thomas, Marlo’s brother, stepped in for her on the show alongside Savannah Guthrie. He explained that it was the first time in 21 years of our series that Marlo wasn’t present. She’s currently taking a break following the passing of her husband, Phil Donahue.

Tony said: ‘She loved her guy, that was a 44-year marriage that was a true love affair.

Everyone who phoned me expressed disbelief about how much of a romantic relationship they had and the strong connection between them. Indeed, they seemed incredibly close, and I think it will take some time before she’s ready to cope with this.

He added that Thomas  ‘will be back next year’ for the fundraising campaign.

If Marlo is around, we send our love to her. We know she would be happy to see you discussing the important work of St. Jude, as it holds a special place in both her heart and yours.

Phil Donahue, the former host of The Phil Donahue Show, sadly passed away, with his family, which included his actress wife, by his side, in his own home.

She wrote on Instagram, along with a sweet photo of the pair riding a motorbike together on vacation: ‘I’m sure by now you’ve heard the very sad news that I lost my sweetheart last night.

I want to let you know that I’m planning to temporarily step aside from this page, as I need some time to focus on taking care of myself and those who cared for Phil deeply. They were the ones who kept him close in their hearts.

However, I didn’t want to leave without expressing my gratitude for the heartfelt messages of affection and encouragement that have poured in throughout the day, the actress clarified.

Additionally, we appreciate your graciousness in allowing Phil and I to embark on our life journey alongside you for all these years.

She went on to say: ‘Being a man devoted to his fans throughout his career, Phil found great joy in our small online community, and I am confident that he would be deeply moved by the touching thoughts and memories you have all been posting.’

While I am away, may you enjoy excellent health and joyful times surrounded by your dear ones, your family and friends. My heartfelt wish is that you maintain the bonds with those you value most, as I was fortunate to do so with my cherished Philip, Donahue’s second spouse expressed.

She continued with, “Love, Marlo,” as her signature, accompanied by an old photo of them both taken during their European getaway.

‘P.S. This is one of my favorite photos of Phil and me,’ she wrote. ‘[T]aken on vacation.’

In 1977, they first crossed paths when they encountered each other during a talk show, with Donahue serving as the host and Thomas as the featured guest.

Three years after their initial meeting, they got married, as Thomas had experienced an immediate connection with her, the TV personality shared in a 2015 Facebook post.

In 1977, I had the chance to meet Phil for the first time on the talk show ‘Donahue.’ This encounter took place, as Thomas – a man still active in acting and production today – penned back then.

‘He flirted, I giggled, and his TV audience watched us fall in love.’

The couple would then marry in 1980, having five children.

Over the next sixteen years, Donahue’s influential talk show continued, welcoming renowned figures like Bill Clinton, Muhammad Ali, Johnny Carson, Ayn Rand, and Nelson Mandela as guests.

He would also go on to win 20 Emmys – 10 for outstanding host, and 10 for the overall show.
