How Arcane Season 2 masterfully used Ekko’s LoL lore and expanded it

As a long-time fan of League of Legends and Arcane, I must say that Ekko stole the show in Season 2! The way his character evolved, particularly in Episode 7 “Pretend Like It’s the First Time”, was nothing short of brilliant. His lore from the game was beautifully woven into the show, making it a delight for fans like me.

Ekko was given the spotlight in the final episodes of Arcane Season 2 and he didn’t disappoint.

In episode 7 of Arcane Season 2, titled “Pretend Like It’s the First Time,” Ekko takes center stage as the main character, making it one of the standout episodes within the entirety of the League of Legends series.

Ekko’s backstory from League of Legends significantly impacts not just the given episode, but also the culmination of Arcane Season 2. It serves as an outstanding demonstration of how Arcane skillfully intertwines LoL lore and expands upon it, crafting scenes that captivate fans of the game and make them adore the series.

In the seventh episode of Arcane Season 2, Ekko and Heimerdinger find themselves in an alternate world where Zaun thrives like Piltover, but tragically, Vi lost her life during a burglary at Jayce’s workshop when she was young. Since this event occurred, Jayce did not create the Hextech technology that exists in our universe.

In another dimension, Heimerdinger enjoys a comfortable life, whereas Ekko yearns to return to their original reality. Despite appreciating the benefits of that universe – such as working as an inventor and romancing Powder – he remains determined to revisit the original Zaun and assist his fellow citizens.

To accomplish this task, Ekko gathers the shards of Hextech from Jayce’s wrecked lab, then, with assistance from Heimerdinger and Powder, invents the necessary technology within that particular reality.

In the course of events, Ekko manipulates inversions on Jayce’s speed artifact, resulting in the creation of the Z-Drive, a time-loop mechanism enabling him to rewind time for as long as four seconds.

After that point, Heimerdinger discovers a method for returning Ekko to his native reality, and a Zaunite accompanies the Z-Drive.

Due to it, Ekko managed to stop Jinx from exploding a bomb that could have killed both of them during the conflict between Zaun and Piltover soldiers, as well as Ambessa, in episode 9 titled “The Dirt Under Your Nails.

In due course, Ekko interferes with Viktor’s scheme by dramatically hurling the Z-Drive towards him, shattering the glass and causing the Hextech to react with Viktor.

What is the Z-Drive in League of Legends?

Ekko’s skills in League of Legends are significantly influenced by the Z-Drive, a tool capable of altering time. This is why he’s often called “The Time Walker.

In simple terms, Ekko’s League of Legends biography states that he navigates various realities using his own creation called the Zero Drive, aiming to create the ideal moment perfectly each time. To those outside his circle, it appears as if Ekko accomplishes feats that seem impossible on the first try every single time.

Previously, it was unknown how Ekko developed the Z-Drive and mastered time control, as depicted in Arcane. However, with the release of the series, which is confirmed to be accurate, we have gained additional insights into Ekko’s background from Zaun.
