Doctor Who’s Steven Moffat responds to “upset” from some fans

As a long-time Doctor Who fan with decades of memories etched into my timeline, I can’t help but appreciate Steven Moffat‘s return to the TARDIS. His nuanced writing and knack for crafting intricate narratives have always been a joy to watch unfold.

Steven Moffat, a previous showrunner for Doctor Who and scriptwriter, has addressed the concerns raised by fans who felt disturbed in recent times.

During the tenure of Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi on the BBC show (2009-2017), Moffat held the reins. Later, he made a comeback to the science-fiction series for the 2024 episode titled ‘Boom’ and the forthcoming Christmas special named ‘Joy to the World’.

During the past weekend, Moffat participated in a real-time viewing and discussion event for the show ‘Boom’. He offered insights on the divided response towards the show’s religious themes that have been stirred up in the audience.

In the given episode, The Doctor criticized soldiers who fought due to religious reasons, arguing that they were not exercising independent thought but rather mindlessly obeying orders. This point of view sparked some disagreement among the viewers.

On social media, Moffat clarified that the dialogue from The Doctor wasn’t intended as a criticism of faith, rather it reflected his character’s exasperation in the face of his predicament (specifically, being stuck on a landmine and immobile).

He penned, “Regarding religious matters,” he said. “I understand that some devout individuals were displeased, yet consider this: The Doctor is filled with fear, grief, and uncontainable anger – his views on the topic are not entirely reflected in what he’s expressing while venting his emotions.

He explained, “I inserted that subsequent part discussing faith because The Doctor trusts that the universe follows a logical pattern and that compassion prevails, yet there’s no empirical evidence to support this. Isn’t this notion similar to having faith in a higher power or God?

As a hardcore gamer counting down the days, I can hardly contain my excitement for just one more month until this year’s Christmas special! Just yesterday, a tantalizing sneak peek was dropped, hinting at an adrenaline-pumping adventure featuring The Doctor and Nicola Coughlan, who’ll be joining us as a temporary companion. They’re already facing danger together, leaving me on the edge of my seat!

In the UK, the TV series “Doctor Who” is aired on BBC One, while it’s accessible on Disney+ elsewhere. For those in the UK, you can also find classic episodes of “Doctor Who” on BBC iPlayer.
