Cher reveals she was ‘shocked’ to learn her real name after birth certificate mix-up
As an ardent fan of Cher, I must say that her latest revelation about her real name being Cheryl instead of Cherilyn has left me utterly astounded and slightly amused. The iconic singer’s life story is a testament to the fact that even the most celebrated figures among us can have unexpected twists and turns. It’s almost as if she’s living a real-life version of one of her own blockbuster movies!
Recently, it came as a surprise to her when she found out the true identity behind her name while going through the process of officially changing it legally.
In the first part of her recently published autobiography, titled “Cher: The Memoir”, the renowned musician, aged 78, narrated an incident from her past where she discovered a clerical error at the hospital during her birth.
For quite some time, she thought her name was Cherilyn, but later chose to officially adopt the nickname Cher that she’s widely known by.
In her revealing memoir, the Pop Goddess (formerly known as Cherilyn) clarified that she adopted the name “Cher” only after officially changing it from Cherilyn, a decision she made much later in life. She added that her late ex-husband Sonny Bono would have approved of her portrayal of him in the book.
She said she was surprised when she discovered her name was Cheryl.
In simpler terms, Cher mentioned that the mistake took place at the hospital because her mother, who was only 19 years old, unexpectedly went into labor a full month ahead of the expected delivery date.
In 1946, she said her mother Georgia Holt also went through a long, unmedicated labor.
In her memoir, she noted that by the time I got there at about 7:30 a.m. on May 20th (Monday), she was already drained of energy.
She said that when her mother was recovering after giving birth, a nurse asked for her name.
It was then the misunderstanding occurred.
In a surprising turn of events, I found myself in a conversation where a stranger proposed a name for me. Although my mother had no inkling about this, I went along with her suggestion, explaining that Lana Turner was my favorite actress and her daughter was named Cheryl. Since my own name is Lynda, I playfully suggested the name Cherilyn as a possible choice.
In the late ’70s, the Grammy winner decided to legally adopt the name Cher, replacing her original family name Sarkisian as well as those of her stepfather Gilbert LaPiere and former spouses Sonny Bono and Gregg Allman, which she had acquired over time.
To make her official name change, she had to produce her birth certificate. Upon obtaining it, she discovered the name she’d always believed was hers actually wasn’t accurate at that particular moment in her life.
Following discovery of an error in her birth certificate’s listing of her name, Cher inquired about it with her mother.
The singer reminisced about her mother saying, “I was just a young girl, bearing much distress. Have some understanding.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, let me share an intriguing tidbit from the Believe singer’s past. Back in 1979, you might be surprised to learn that she decided to legally adopt the moniker Cher – a name change that adds depth to her captivating persona.
‘I like it,’ Cher told Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show at the time.
It’s more convenient for me if everyone simply calls me by my preferred name, rather than questioning whether it should be Mrs. Allman, Mrs. Bono, Mrs. Bono Allman, Miss Cher, or something else.
She added: I mean, Cher is just fine. Just plain Cher.’
In her memoir, Cher additionally disclosed other facts, among them being the sole celebrity who ended their relationship with her.
Additionally, she shared insights into the reasons behind her quick divorce from her former husband, Gregg Allman, following their nine-day marriage.
