Star Trek’s Captain Kirk Gets A Shocking Redesign Ahead Of Major Twist

The newest story arc for Captain Kirk is setting him up to be potentially the best villain the series has ever seen.

IDW Publishing recently showed off a new cover for the upcoming issue #8 of Star Wars: The Last Starship, illustrated by Hernan Gonzalez and Lee Loughridge. The cover presents a surprising take on Captain Kirk: he’s depicted as the Borg King, sitting on a futuristic throne and positioned in front of the remains of the Borg Queen, Agnes Jurati. This is a very different image than fans are used to seeing of the Starfleet captain.

In IDW Publishing’s Star Wars: The Last Starship #8, Borg Queen Agnes Jurati believes she’s found a way to fix the disaster known as the Burn. She leaves the crew of the U.S.S. Omega and tries to absorb the energy of a powerful singularity on Deep Space Hope. However, Captain Kirk has followed her, wanting to understand why she and the Borg resurrected him.

Would the galaxy be saved, or destroyed? The story details an epic confrontation where surrender seems inevitable… except for Captain James T. Kirk.

What To Remember About Star Trek: The Last Starship

The comic series Star Trek: The Last Starship began in September, following the crew of the Enterprise-Omega shortly after a devastating event called The Burn. The Burn was a galaxy-wide disaster that rendered almost all dilithium useless, causing every warp core to explode. This left the Federation and most space travelers stranded throughout the galaxy.

The effects of the devastating event known as The Burn were explored in the later seasons of Star Trek: Discovery. Now, The Last Starship introduces a fresh crew and a new direction for the franchise. Writer Jackson Lanzing describes the new series as having a more sophisticated, gripping, and inventive style, but emphasizes it will be easy for new readers to jump in. He promises a dark and atmospheric story, illustrated by Adrián Bonilla, that doesn’t require any prior Star Trek knowledge.

Since it first came out, Star Trek: The Last Starship has been very popular with both readers and critics. Sales figures for the third issue, released in November, were even higher than the second issue – a rare achievement, particularly for independent comics, according to the creators.

Star Wars: The Last Starship #8 from IDW Publishing goes on sale on June 17.
