In 2020, Peacock revived the popular ’90s show, Saved by the Bell, much to the delight of fans who grew up with the original. The reboot brought back almost all of the original cast and lasted for two seasons, but many viewers felt it should have continued longer.

As a TV critic, I have to say the recent Saved by the Bell revival was a fun ride. Picking up 26 years after Zack and Kelly’s wedding, it focused on a fresh group of students at Bayside High. While it only lasted two seasons before getting the axe, I honestly felt it had the potential for at least one more – it was good stuff, and I was enjoying where they were going with it.

Peacock’s Saved By The Bell Reboot Deserved A Third Season

The new Saved by the Bell on Peacock updates the classic show for today’s audiences. It’s a risky move that surprisingly pays off. This time around, Zack Morris is the Governor of California.

As governor, he closed schools in poorer neighborhoods and transferred the students to better schools in wealthier areas. This caused friction at schools like Bayside High, which experienced a sudden increase in new students who didn’t immediately fit in with the existing student body.

The show lasted two seasons with a total of 20 episodes. The first season received a 76% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and the second season achieved a perfect 100% score. It was gaining popularity and had a story with potential for more seasons, but unfortunately, it was cancelled after two seasons.

The Saved By The Bell Reboot Found A Strong Blend Of Old & New

Saved by the Bell successfully revived its original concept in a way that few reboots manage to do. Often, revivals try so hard to be different from the original that it makes you question why they even used the same name. Examples of this include Bel-Air, MacGyver, and the recent version of The Twilight Zone.

Many reboots simply retread old ground, offering little that’s fresh or exciting. In these cases, it’s often better to just rewatch the original series. Examples include shows like And Just Like That, Gossip Girl, and Charmed.

The new Saved by the Bell strikes a great balance. It introduces fresh ideas and develops its characters in interesting ways, while still honoring what fans loved about the original. It’s clever and knows what it is, but doesn’t feel overly pretentious. The show is funny and makes good use of satire without being annoying – it’s simply a well-made series you can easily enjoy.
