season 5 features some surprising real-world parallels.
The popular Prime Video series The Boys, created by Eric Kripke, returned last summer for what was expected to be its next-to-last season, showing Homelander (Antony Starr) gaining power through violence. Now, season 5 will conclude the series, and viewers can expect surprising links to actual events in the real world.
During an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley about the upcoming season 5 of The Boys, creator Eric Kripke shared that the show surprisingly foreshadowed some recent political events in the U.S. Kripke explained that the season was written before Donald Trump secured re-election, and there turned out to be unexpected parallels between the show’s plot and what actually happened. He went on to say:
It’s actually ironic. For the first few seasons, we based episodes directly on current events. We wrote season five before the election, which meant we were trying to imagine what an authoritarian America might look like. We looked to history – to other countries that had experienced similar situations – for inspiration, and then applied it to the US. I initially hoped it would feel like a cautionary tale – that we’d avoided a dangerous path. But unfortunately, things went the other way. It’s shocking and concerning how many of the extreme scenarios we wrote, things we thought were far-fetched, have actually happened, and not in a good way.
Kripke hopes viewers will see The Boys as a warning about the world around them, prompting them to really think about things.
We hope viewers watch ‘The Boys’ and realize how disturbingly accurate it is. We weren’t trying to predict the future, but rather imagine what a truly dangerous, authoritarian figure in America might be like. Ultimately, we want the show to be a wake-up call. We hope it makes people pay attention to what’s happening around them and consider taking action. Though, realistically, we don’t expect the show to actually change things – the past eight years have taught us that ‘The Boys’ is more about reflecting reality than altering it.
Okay, let’s talk about season four of The Boys. If you thought the show’s satire was on the nose before, buckle up – it’s practically shouting it now. Homelander’s arc this season felt very directly inspired by Trump, and the show really dove headfirst into exploring the dangers of authoritarianism and, frankly, fascism. It wasn’t subtle, but it was definitely impactful.
The show’s comedic take on things hasn’t been universally well-received. Last year, viewers flooded the review sections with negative ratings, and its audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is currently the lowest it’s ever been, at 54%.
Considering Jack Quaid’s recent statements and how season 4 of The Boys concluded, we can expect a lot of controversy. The last season left Homelander firmly in power in the US government, so the next season will almost certainly feature even stronger political themes and criticism.
Season 5 of The Boys will bring back familiar faces like Jack Quaid, Karl Urban, Erin Moriarty, and the rest of the core cast for another eight episodes. Plus, the universe of the show is growing with a new prequel series called Vought Rising, though we don’t have a release date for that one yet.
The second season of the show’s other spin-off, Gen V, premiered last fall. While the creator, Kripke, has hinted at a third season, Prime Video hasn’t confirmed whether the show will be renewed yet.
However, according to Kripke, the creator of The Boys, season 5 will continue to address political themes as the story reaches its end. This means the final episodes might spark disagreement among viewers.
