As a dedicated cinephile who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless shows, I can confidently say that the conclusion of Arcane is indeed bittersweet. The animated series, despite being based on a video game, has proven itself to be a captivating tale of political intrigue, emotional depth, and engaging characters. Its end, though finalized, leaves room for speculation about the future of its universe.
The animated show “Arcane” is derived from the popular video game “League of Legends” by Riot Games. It’s been streaming on Netflix for two seasons, with fans showing great enthusiasm, but as of Saturday, November 23, it has concluded its run. Unfortunately, there are no plans for a third season of “Arcane.” This marks the end.
Could it be that “Arcane” has come to an end as a series, but Riot Games has no plans to abandon the “League of Legends” universe as a backdrop for potential future television shows and films? As reported by Variety, they’ve already purchased a season’s worth of scripts from writer Justin Piasecki, hinting at a live-action “League of Legends” show in development. Although this doesn’t guarantee the production of such a show, it does suggest that Riot is serious about investing in this universe. Given the success of other video game adaptations like “The Last of Us,” it’s not surprising that they’d want to tap into that market, and who wouldn’t envy them for the opportunity?
It’s been reported that Christian Linke, who was the showrunner of Arcane, has been developing an animated film within the League of Legends universe. Since they’ve invested a lot of time and emotion into creating Arcane, it seems possible that this movie could be a continuation of the story, as hinted by Linke when speaking to Animation Magazine. He suggested he has ideas for where the narrative might progress.
We spent nine years at this point on these 11 or so characters, so there’s also something about wanting to make sure that we are able to tell the stories of other characters that we’re also really passionate about.
It has been confirmed that the second season of Arcane will conclude the series, however, more TV shows or movies based in the League of Legends universe, potentially even featuring the same characters, may be on the horizon, though an official announcement hasn’t been made yet. Keep your eyes peeled for future announcements!
