Samuel L Jackson’s new movie is now available to watch on Netflix
As a seasoned gamer of both cinematic and digital realms, I must admit that my anticipation for “The Piano Lesson” was as palpable as the tension between the characters in this August Wilson adaptation. The star-studded cast alone was enough to pique my interest, but it was the intriguing narrative of a family grappling with tradition and their future that truly drew me in.
The Piano Lesson, the new film starring Samuel L Jackson, is now available to watch on Netflix.
The movie, based on August Wilson’s 1987 play, centers around a Black family struggling during the Great Depression over the decision of what to do with an inherited piano. They grapple with whether they should sell it for financial gain or keep it as a symbol of their heritage.
As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the upcoming film I’m excited about is directed by the talented Malcolm Washington. The star-studded lineup boasts some incredible names: John David Washington, Ray Fisher, Erykah Badu, Danielle Deadwyler, and Corey Hawkins. Notably, Denzel Washington lends his production expertise to this project as well.
After debuting at the Telluride Film Festival in August and a recent limited theater screening, “The Piano Lesson” was added to Netflix for viewing as of this past Friday (November 22nd).
So far, the movie has been widely praised, starting with a flawless 100% positive review on Rotten Tomatoes after its initial screening. However, this rating has slightly decreased following its broader release, but it continues to maintain an impressive 90% approval rating.
You can read a selection of reviews below:
AV Club
In “The Piano Lesson,” August Wilson’s spirits seem more real than ever, and the movie struggles to hold them back, much like an old and tensed family that could use a seance.
The Daily Beast
A profound and emotional story exploring the struggle between holding onto past struggles and moving forward, filled with complex characters, engaging conflicts, vivid details, deep-seated desires, and a rich historical background.
The Observer
This film is visually appealing and marks an impressive first venture into directing by Malcolm Washington, who is Denzel Washington’s son. However, much like the previous August Wilson adaptations, it maintains a stage-like quality and a formalistic approach, indicating that it struggles to escape its origins on the stage.
The New York Times
“The Piano Lesson, produced by Denzel Washington, is considered the weakest among the Pittsburgh Cycle. However, when you’re dealing with Wilson’s material, it naturally contains depth, and the issues this movie explores have never felt more relevant.
The Piano Lesson is streaming on Netflix now.
