Caitríona Balfe and Jamie Dornan’s “stunning” British drama is now streaming on the BBC

With eight fantastic seasons of Outlander coming to a close, if you’re a fan of Caitríona Balfe and want to see more of her work, we’ve got a perfect movie suggestion for you to enjoy tonight or during the Easter holiday.

Kenneth Branagh wrote and directed Belfast, which premiered in the UK and Ireland in January 2022. The film is his most personal work yet, drawing inspiration from his own upbringing in Northern Ireland. Caitríona Balfe and Jamie Dornan play Buddy’s parents, and the story follows nine-year-old Buddy (played by Jude Hill) as he comes of age amidst the conflict known as The Troubles in Belfast.

I really loved Belfast when I watched it, and it seems like critics did too! It’s got an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on a ton of reviews – over 300, actually. Time Out even called it possibly the most feel-good movie ever made, considering it’s set during a really tough time. And TIME Magazine said it’s just impossible not to get swept up in how much love and energy the movie has.

If you’re interested in seeing it, Belfast is currently streaming on BBC iPlayer. It was shown on BBC Two last night and will remain available for the next 29 days.

The film wasn’t just praised by critics; it’s also a hit with audiences on IMDb. One viewer called it a “stunning slice of life,” and highlighted that it’s Kenneth Branagh’s most personal and arguably his best film in years, being based on his own life.

One reviewer praised the film, saying it was excellent and fully deserved its awards success. They described it as a powerful combination of moving, funny, and heartbreaking moments.

The film Belfast earned seven Academy Award nominations, including a win for Best Original Screenplay for Kenneth Branagh. It was also nominated for six BAFTA Awards, winning the award for Outstanding British Film.

In an interview with Digital Spy before the premiere of Outlander‘s last season, Caitríona Balfe and her co-star Sam Heughan revealed they weren’t told how the show would conclude. Balfe explained that the writers circulated many different script drafts to maintain secrecy about the ending.

Heughan explained that there was a lot of excitement surrounding the show’s ending, fueled by fans constantly asking about it. However, it seems the creators had different ideas for how things would unfold. While they’ve finished filming, the final version could be different after editing, so the true ending remains uncertain.

Belfast is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.
