Cynthia Erivo reveals the REAL reason why she and Ariana Grande have cried during all of their Wicked promotional interviews

As a die-hard musical fan, I’ve been on this emotional rollercoaster since the first trailer of Wicked dropped! The journey of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande promoting this long-awaited adaptation has been nothing short of breathtaking. Their heartfelt responses to the film, the obstacles they overcame during production – from COVID to strikes – have made me feel like I’ve been there with them every step of the way.

Cynthia Erivo explains the reasons behind their frequent emotional breakdowns during promotions for Wicked, a musical they both worked on together.

The pair have been travelling the globe to promote their role in the long-awaited adaptation of the Broadway Musical, and in a new interview, Cynthia admitted they get ‘very emotional’ while talking about the film.

In an appearance on the Heart Breakfast show, Amanda Holden expressed to Cynthia that, based on interviews she has read about both you and Ariana, it seems like you two are always left in tears.

She mentioned: “We certainly do! I believe it’s due to the fact that people are bringing such enthusiasm with them. As they enter, their emotional reactions seem to fill the room. It’s the first time we’ve discussed this topic, so we’re both reminiscing and recounting our experiences and the path we’ve taken together.

‘We can’t help it, we get very emotional about it.’

Amanda mentioned: “Indeed, I can understand why. You faced COVID, you experienced strikes, and overcame numerous hurdles in the process of making this film.

After the strike, the final song had actually been filmed. So, we should have completed the project but unfortunately couldn’t get together at that time. Consequently, we paused for six months before finally wrapping things up with it.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that after much anticipation, “Wicked: Part One” graced our cinema screens this past Friday! Can you believe it? The next chapter, “Wicked: Part Two,” is already scheduled for release on November 21, 2025. Mark your calendars, my friends – we’ve got a magical journey ahead!

The two-part feature is adapted from the long-running and much-loved Broadway and West End musical.

As an utterly smitten admirer, I’ve got to say, the early responses from fellow movie enthusiasts are nothing short of electrifying! The film has left countless viewers teary-eyed, confessing that it’s forever altered their perspectives. They can’t help but exclaim, “This experience will never be forgotten, or reverted back to how I was before!

In conversation with X, spectators expressed their feelings about the movie as follows: ‘The film made me cry so much…’ or ‘These two characters, Cynthia and Ariana, have left an indelible mark on me.’

“This left a deep impact on me

In the meantime, many critics have already shared their thoughts, generally commending the main actors for their impressive performances.

Yet while some reviews have branded the film a ‘fabulous spectacle’ others have declared: ‘it doesn’t come close to defying gravity’.

In simpler terms, Peter Bradshaw from The Guardian said that it’s like being immersed in an intense, candy-coated dream filled with the captivating performance of Cynthia Erivo. It keeps you submerged in a hyperreal M&M pit for approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.

In praise of Cynthia, he mentioned that her captivating portrayal of Elphaba had an irresistible gravitational force, even among an illustrious ensemble of actors.

Brian Viner from The Daily Mail pens: “This is an amazing show, best appreciated on the largest screen you can find.

He expressed his enthusiasm over the casting decisions, saying: “Erivo and Grande are both spot-on and incredibly captivating.

I admit that Wicked’s songs seem a bit repetitive to me, yet it’s tough not to appreciate their delivery by those two talented individuals. Ariana Grande showcases great comedic timing, which she effectively uses whenever Glinda playfully flips her lush hair.

‘Yeoh, Bailey and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard offer splendid support.’

Peter Debruge of Variety commended: ‘Unlike some recent musicals that attempted to conceal their musical nature from viewers, Wicked openly acknowledges its character much like Elphaba does her green complexion.’

‘Turns out such confidence makes all the difference in how they’re perceived.’

Dave from Rolling Stone expresses that when Erivo perfectly captures that significant moment and etches herself into Oz’s history with a broomstick, it seems like there’s nowhere else you’d rather be but right next to her. Not even home feels as inviting. He further emphasizes that Erivo is the one who truly transcends expectations.

While The Independent commended Ariana and Cynthia’s acting, they criticized the film’s camera work as a potential drawback for their performances.
