James Norton’s British drama is now available to watch on Netflix

As a passionate fan and a connoisseur of heart-warming British cinema, I must say that “Joy” has truly left me enchanted! The story of the pioneering work behind In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is not only historically significant but also deeply emotional. James Norton’s portrayal of Robert Edwards in this moving masterpiece is nothing short of extraordinary.

James Norton returns to our TV screens, starring in Netflix’s significant new British film, titled “Joy“, which revolves around the advancements in In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).

After its debut at the BFI London Film Festival last month, the film “Joy” has been made available on Netflix starting today, November 22nd, for all subscribers.

The film narrates the journey of Patrick Steptoe, played by Bill Nighy, Robert Edwards (portrayed by Norton), and Jean Purdy (Thomasin McKenzie) as they pioneered the groundbreaking development of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) in the 1960s and 1970s.

The development resulted in the world’s inaugural ‘lab-grown baby’, Louise Joy Brown, being born in July 1978. Since the introduction of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), over 12 million children have been born from this method globally.

Before the first showing, Norton conversed with Digital Spy regarding how he intended to depict Robert Edwards, who received the Nobel Prize in 2010 for his contributions to IVF development.

He shared that it was understood the movie would ideally resonate with the family, and it was important to uphold the memory in this task. So, he advised, “Give your best effort, find the motivation, and strive to steer clear of imitation.

To truly understand someone, focus on their core characteristics first. Later, when your work is complete, remember to set aside any attempts to perfectly portray them and instead, enjoy the present moment together – the interaction between you as actors. Overanalyzing and trying to mimic every aspect of a person’s life can sometimes be counterproductive.

Joy intends to shine a light once more on Jean Purdy’s significant role in the advancement of In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF), a contribution that had been largely overshadowed until she was honored with a memorial plaque in 2015, three decades after her passing.

Thomasin McKenzie takes on a new challenge with this role, portraying someone who is older than herself for the first time in her acting career.

Joy is available to watch now on Netflix.
