A new Welsh crime drama called Old Town Murders is coming to the BBC. The broadcaster describes the six-part series as clever and full of unexpected turns. It’s written, created, and executive produced by Matthew Barry, who has previously worked on shows like Men Up and The Guest, and will be filmed in Tenby, West Wales.
This funny and engaging crime series focuses on two detectives who unexpectedly become partners and are both starting fresh in their lives.
Detective Inspector Glyn Walsh returns from leave to investigate the murder of a respected university professor. He teams up with Detective Sergeant Sion Dearden, and their investigation quickly leads them into the hidden secrets of the university as they search for the killer.

The new show, Old Town Murders, will likely focus on solving crimes one after another. The BBC has announced that after identifying the initial killer, the detectives will be called upon to investigate a series of other puzzling cases in the same town.
Mark Lewis Jones (known for Gangs of London and The Light in the Hall) and Steffan Rhodri (from Death Valley and Gavin and Stacey) will play the lead roles.

Along with the announcement, Matthew Barry explained that the show is much more than just a crime drama. He said it’s fundamentally a story about friendship, starting over, and finding the strength to make a fresh start at any age.
Barry wrote this series with Mark and Steffan, having previously collaborated with them on Men Up. He’s excited to see them and the rest of the talented cast perform these characters.

According to Nick Andrews, Head of Commissioning at BBC Cymru Wales, the new series Old Town Murders combines the beauty of Wales with a captivating murder mystery. He praises the show’s creator, Matt Barry, and the team at Quay Street for consistently producing high-quality drama, and expresses excitement about this latest collaboration, predicting it will be a hugely successful series.
Davina Earl and Nicola Shindler from Quay Street Productions praise Old Town Murders, saying it delivers everything fans love about Matt’s work: compelling characters, clever writing, a heartwarming tone, and captivating mysteries that will keep you hooked.
We’re thrilled to have Mark and Steffan playing DI Glyn Walsh and DS Sion Dearden. We’re excited to see them portray the unique connection between these two characters on screen.
