Vera Farmiga posts a touching tribute to Patrick Wilson as filming on The Conjuring: Last Rites wraps
Oh, dear horror enthusiasts! If you’ve been following the chilling tales of The Conjuring universe, I must say, we’re at the edge of our seats with bated breath! As a dedicated fan who’s been along for the ride since the beginning, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions as Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson bid adieu to their on-screen characters Lorraine and Ed Warren.
Prepare some tissues if you’re a fan of the Conjuring universe! Earlier today, lead actress Vera Farmiga expressed a touching goodbye on Instagram to her co-star, Patrick Wilson, as they are wrapping up filming for their upcoming project.
Fans have warmly appreciated the portrayals of Lorraine and Ed Warren by Farmiga and Wilson since they first appeared in The Conjuring Universe back in 2013, as these characters were based on real demonologists of the same name. Over the last decade, we’ve been captivated by the heartfelt relationship that blossomed between the actors on screen across multiple films, and next year, we can look forward to seeing their story come to a close in The Conjuring: Last Rites when it hits theaters.
In Farmiga’s recent post, she mentioned that she and Wilson had agreed to portray these characters in their initial Warner Bros. contract, and they have cherished their time together since then. However, the duo will soon separate as they complete filming their final scenes. Wilson will put away his costume symbolizing Ed Warren for good, which includes shaving off his distinctive sideburns, effectively ending their on-screen marriage of 12 years.
The highly successful horror movie series has managed to surpass the prestigious $1 billion mark, making it one of the rare exceptions. In actuality, the total earnings from this film collection exceed an astounding $2 billion, a truly remarkable accomplishment. Across multiple years, eight films have been produced within this cinematic universe, encompassing three installments of “The Conjuring,” “The Nun” and “The Nun 2,” as well as the trilogy of “Annabelle” movies.
Last Rites” marks the conclusion of the series. Although some have questioned the use of the term “final,” Farmiga’s statement appears to back this up. At a minimum, it signifies the end for the Warrens, and the “Conjuring” films owe their existence to them.
Although the upcoming film has been scheduled for release, boasts a director, scriptwriter, and cast, there remains no official confirmation as yet concerning its plotline. It’s plausible that “Last Rites” will borrow elements from one of Ed and Lorraine’s past cases, much like the preceding trilogy. However, it’s uncertain which specific case, as ‘last rites’ are prayers usually given before someone’s passing – a concept not typically indicative of a demon-centric series.
Earlier movies have delved into the stories of Annabelle, the Perron family’s haunting, the Enfield poltergeist incident, and the case of Arne Johnson. Remarkably, the second film makes a nod to the Warrens’ well-known probe into the Amityville Horror.
Some fans theorize that the fourth and final film will either focus on the Smurl or the Snedeker family haunting. Shortly after moving into a historic home, the Snedekers reported experiencing paranormal activity, unaware the house was previously a funeral home. This case was the basis for the 2009 film The Haunting in Connecticut.
Instead, it appears that the movie is probably focusing on the Smurl family’s haunting case, as it’s relatively less well-known compared to other hauntings. In Pennsylvania, the Smurls claimed to have been visited by ghosts in their home.
The Conjuring: Last Rites will be released in theaters on September 5, 2025.
