Skeleton Crew: How Ratatouille inspired everyone’s favorite new droid
As a seasoned gamer and Star Wars enthusiast with over three decades of fandom under my belt, I can confidently say that SM-33 from “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” is poised to join the ranks of beloved droid characters in this galaxy far, far away. The comedic timing and wit displayed by Nick Frost’s performance have me eager for each new episode, as he effortlessly blends humor with a hint of edge that only a pirate droid could possess.
In each new Star Wars series, it appears another adorable droid captures viewers’ hearts. The upcoming original Disney+ show, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, introduces SM-33, the droid that everyone simply can’t stop discussing. It’s no wonder why!
In the voice of comedian Nick Frost, this pirate droid seems a bit scattered – both physically and in terms of his memory. However, being scatterbrained doesn’t mean he’s useless. Star Wars droids are known for providing laughs no matter what the situation, but it appears that SM-33 might have a more edgy sense of humor as well. Given that he’s a pirate, this isn’t too surprising.
Any actor versed in the world of films and television would likely seek inspiration from prior tales to create original characters, especially those hailing from a distinct universe like Star Wars. In the case of Frost, a Pixar movie served as an inspiration for the droid character he voices in Skeleton Crew. Perhaps a story set in France, possibly revolving around a restaurant?
Frost often sees the connection between SM-33 and the being in his mind as analogous to a Star Wars-inspired take on the story of Ratatouille – with the android acting like the masterful chef, but guided by an unseen rat pulling its strings.
He believes much of the quirkiness he displays stems from malfunctions, which he seems to find amusing. To me, it’s as if these oddities spark something in his mind, similar to a tickle, he shared with StarWars.com.
The forthcoming live-action show centers around a band of children who unwittingly set off on a perilous journey through space. Judging by the previews, it seems promising for an exciting, thrilling experience.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew premieres its first two episodes on December 3, exclusively on Disney+.
