Based on a True Story showrunner says season 2 delivered “close-ended mystery” but door open to possible season 3
As a seasoned gamer of mystery series with over two decades under my belt, I must say that “Based on a True Story” has managed to keep me hooked since its debut. Though season 2 didn’t quite live up to its predecessor for me, it still delivered enough twists and turns to keep things interesting. But as the finale unfolded, leaving Matt with Tory high and dry while framing Nathan for the murders, I couldn’t help but feel like the showrunner had left a few too many loose ends dangling.
The second season of “Based on a True Story,” which is now available in its entirety on Peacock, has been released! Although I preferred season 1 slightly, this new season remains engaging, humorous, and full of unexpected twists. For a comprehensive review and explanation of the ending, check out this link. With the way the finale concluded, we’re already speculating about potential future storylines. SPOILERS AHEAD.
As of now, “Based on a True Story” hasn’t been renewed or cancelled by Peacock. So we’re unsure if there will be a season 3. The second season concluded with Matt setting Nathan up for the copycat killer’s murders; Tory in trouble following her marriage to Matt and their plans to escape together with his son; and the real copycat killer, Matt’s sister-in-law Chloe, now under Matt’s control as a hostage. This certainly suggests that Matt has betrayed Tory too. What a cad!
I mean, that’s definitely a lot! In an interview with Screen Rant, showrunner Annie Weisman shared that she believes they’ve told “a close-ended mystery” with “a lot of twists and turns, but there’s a really good payoff.” She thinks that “fans will feel satisfied by the end.”
In simpler terms, I must express a differing opinion from Weisman’s viewpoint. While it is correct that we discover who the imitator murderer is, along with the truth about Drew/Olivia being Matt’s former spouse and mother of his child, as well as uncovering Matt’s true motives, I must admit that if the series ended at this point, I wouldn’t find it fulfilling as a viewer.
Tory finds herself in a tight spot and seeks assistance from Ava, yet Ava has quite a load on her plate as she struggles to free Nathan, who might spend the rest of his life in prison. They also have their baby Jack to take care of at home. Furthermore, there’s uncertainty about Matt and where he took the copycat killer, along with what plans he may have for her. There are still many unresolved plot threads left hanging.
Weisman mentioned further that she and the creative team found it hard to resist the temptation of possibly delving deeper into the story. Given the intrigue and excitement, it seems there are certainly more mysteries to unravel! In an interview with The Direct, Michael Costigan shares the same viewpoint, stating “there’s a lot left unexplored,” as long as the audience is equally keen for additional content. As for me, I can confidently say that this enthusiastic fan looks forward to discovering what transpires next!
Both seasons of Based on a True Story are now streaming on Peacock.
