Two big science fiction movies starring Dave Bautista and other well-known actors are currently very popular on streaming services. Both films did well in theaters when they were released and received good reviews from both critics and viewers. They’re now attracting a lot of attention on HBO Max.
Dune and Dune: Part Two continue to trend high on HBO Max streaming
As of April 1, 2026, both Dune and Dune: Part Two, with Dave Bautista appearing in a significant role, are popular on HBO Max in the U.S., currently holding the #4 and #3 spots, respectively. According to FlixPatrol, they’re only beaten by two John Wick movies: Ballerina at #1 and Chapter 4 at #2.
Despite all the great movies in the top ten, these films ranked higher: The 40-Year-Old Virgin at number 5, followed by Spider-Man at 6, The Amazing Spider-Man at 7, Fackham Hall at 8, Spider-Man 2 at 9, and Evan Almighty rounding out the list at number 10.
The first Dune movie, released in 2021, earned $411 million worldwide. Its sequel, Dune: Part Two, which came out three years later, did even better, bringing in almost $715 million.
Both films have received positive reviews. The first movie has an 83% rating from critics and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The sequel performs even better, with a 92% critic score and a 95% audience score on the same site.
So, I checked out the scores on Metacritic, and it looks like people really enjoyed the second part of this movie more than the first. The first part scored a 74 from critics and a 7.9 from users, but the second part jumped up to a 79 from critics and an impressive 8.4 from regular viewers like me! Definitely seems like they stuck the landing with the finale.
Both films are based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, and this is the second time the story has been adapted for the big screen, following David Lynch’s 1984 film. The first movie tells the story of Paul Atreides’ arrival on the desert planet Arrakis and the beginning of a dangerous conflict. The second film continues the story, showing Atreides joining forces with the Fremen people to fight against House Harkonnen, the group responsible for his father’s death.
Denis Villeneuve, the director known for films like Sicario, Prisoners, and Blade Runner 2049, directed both movies. He collaborated with Jon Spaihts on the screenplays, and Eric Roth also helped write the first one. Alongside Dave Bautista, the films star Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, and many other talented actors.
