Charlie Cox confirms that Netflix's Daredevil series is canon within the MCU

As a lifelong Marvel enthusiast who has been following the intricate web of the MCU since its inception, I can hardly contain my excitement for the return of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock in “Daredevil: Born Again.” After the heart-wrenching cancellation of the original Netflix series, I had all but given up hope that we would ever see our favorite blind lawyer-turned-vigilante again. But now, with the confirmation that the original show is indeed canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, my faith in the MCU has been restored.

In the year ahead, Charlie Cox will reappear on our screens as Matt Murdock in “Daredevil: Born Again,” a fresh series arriving on Disney+. Previously, Cox portrayed Murdock in the “Daredevil” show on Netflix, a hit among viewers until it ended in 2018, largely due to Disney consolidating its intellectual property ahead of debuting their own streaming content. There has been speculation about whether the new “Daredevil” series will follow the narrative from the original, but Cox clarifies that our suspicions are correct. The storyline from the initial show is indeed part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s continuity!

It seems that the Netflix Marvel series such as Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist might also be connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which could potentially lead to complexities. This development is a headache for fans who meticulously follow continuity. To date, we’ve only witnessed Charlie Cox’s Daredevil character appearing in the main MCU, making brief cameos as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk.

To put it simply, during a conversation with Empire magazine, Cox affirmed that the storyline from the initial series remains relevant. He explained, “Much of the past events continue to unfold, and the connections and patterns established in previous seasons are still present.

Initially, Daredevil: Born Again wasn’t strictly planned as a direct sequel. When discussions about the reboot first emerged, Charlie Cox mentioned that there were ideas floating around about reimagining the entire concept. However, in the end, the writers decided to adhere to the original series and it evolved into more of a continuation rather than a complete overhaul.

The upcoming series, “Daredevil: Born Again,” is set some years after the events we previously knew. During this time, Matt, Foggy, and Karen have established a comfortable routine. Matt has reconciled with his dual role as a lawyer and a vigilante. However, Matt Murdock’s arch-nemesis, Wilson Fisk (portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio), has been amassing power and may even be running for political office. This swiftly sets off a chain of events, as trouble inevitably arises when Fisk gets involved.

In addition, Empire showcased a sneak peek of their forthcoming series, starring none other than Murdock in the company of his associates Foggy Nelson (played by Elden Henson) and Karen Page (portrayed by Deborah Ann Woll). Here’s a glimpse:
