Leonard Nimoy’s family didn’t want him to play Spock, says Susan Bay Nimoy
As a lifelong Trekkie who grew up with Leonard Nimoy as my beloved Mr. Spock, it’s hard to express the profound impact he had on me and millions of other fans. To imagine Star Trek without Nimoy’s stoic yet emotive portrayal of the Vulcan is like imagining a world without gravity – it simply defies logic!
Pondering over a universe where Leonard Nimoy didn’t embody Mr. Spock on Star Trek: The Original Series feels surreal, doesn’t it? He first donned the pointy ears in the 60s and kept reprising his role as the logical Vulcan sporadically until the 2013 film, Star Trek Into Darkness. It’s astounding that he spent nearly half a century being synonymous with one character. Yet, according to Susan Bay Nimoy, Leonard himself believed it was the perfect fit for him, as she shared in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE magazine.
However, Susan Nimoy expressed reservations about her husband, Leonard Nimoy, accepting the role, stating that “his family wasn’t supportive of him taking it.” She further explained that they “didn’t grasp his fascination with it: you know, the eyebrow-shaving and the Spock hairstyle.” Yet, she firmly believed that the character was an ideal match for her husband of twenty-six years.
Every actor who accepts a part in Star Trek understands they may forever be linked to that character, particularly if the role becomes well-liked. However, Susan notes that Nimoy was aware of the risks involved, believing Spock had the potential to become an iconic character.
It significantly underplays the fact that: Nimoy’s portrayal of Spock became one of the most renowned roles in television history. Along with inventing the Vulcan salute, Nimoy solidified Spock as the epitome of logical characters. To this day, Spock is recognized globally, and few people are unaware of who this character is or the original actor behind him.
I once checked with my friends who aren’t Star Trek enthusiasts to see if they recognized Spock, and one replied, “Everyone knows Spock!” There was an attempt at the Vulcan greeting, but it wasn’t quite accurate. However, what has left a lasting impression over time isn’t just the character itself, but Leonard Nimoy’s portrayal of Spock.
In films and TV shows, both Zachary Quinto and Ethan Peck have portrayed Spock, yet they understood that they were depicting a duplicate. No other actor can truly embody the role that Leonard Nimoy originally made iconic. Spock will forever be associated with him.
