Marvel finally reveals when Elizabeth Olsen will return as the Scarlet Witch

As a long-time Marvel fanatic who’s witnessed the transformation of Wanda Maximoff from a supporting character to a powerhouse lead, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the news that Elizabeth Olsen will be reprising her role in the upcoming Disney Plus animated series, “Marvel Zombies.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wanda Maximoff stands out among many characters due to her immense popularity, which stems from her prominence and power in the Marvel Comics. When she debuted in the MCU, though, she wasn’t as powerful as her comic book version, causing fans to eagerly advocate for her growth, hoping she would eventually acquire those boundless powers.

In a surprising turn, Elizabeth Olsen’s captivating portrayal of Wanda swiftly endeared her to fans in the Marvel universe despite minimal appearances, earning her a significant role in the adored Emmy-winning Disney Plus series, “WandaVision.” This marked the long-awaited mainstage appearance for Wanda, as she evolved into the Scarlet Witch. Subsequently, Olsen took on a leading role in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” where Wanda’s character embarked on a villainous journey due to grief and seemingly met her end, hinting at the fate of the former Avenger.

It’s now clear that Elizabeth Olsen isn’t done with Marvel Studios, as she’ll be returning to her role in a future project according to the latest announcements.

Elizabeth Olsen will voice Wanda Maximoff in Marvel Zombies

In the upcoming Disney Plus animated series “Marvel Zombies,” Elizabeth Olsen will once again play her character Wanda Maximoff, also known as Scarlet Witch. A recent announcement about the Marvel Animation series has disclosed its voice cast, and indeed, Olsen is included on this list.

It’s no real shock, given the connection. The Marvel Zombies animated series appears to be a spin-off from an episode of another animated show, What If…?, which itself was part of the same universe. In “What If… Zombies?!” the surviving Avengers confronted a global zombie outbreak that had decimated populations worldwide, including many original Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes. Although Olsen didn’t voice Wanda in that specific episode (as Wanda was already a zombie and only made grunting noises), she did lend her voice to other versions of Wanda in various episodes throughout the second season.

Marvel finally reveals when Elizabeth Olsen will return as the Scarlet Witch

In simpler terms, “Marvel Zombies” is a four-part series set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe where our heroes face a zombie apocalypse. Similar to the “What If…?” episode, this animated show will have a more mature tone compared to others in the genre. However, it’s pushing boundaries as it has been given a TV-MA rating.

It’s intriguing to speculate about Wanda’s part in this new venture, as animated series don’t always bring back actors from live-action to reprise their roles. However, given that Elizabeth Olsen is coming back, it hints strongly that Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has plans for her involvement in upcoming projects. After all, Kevin Feige, the President of Marvel Studios, has suggested that the character will return to the franchise, and they’re eager to see how it unfolds. Though the storyline from Marvel Zombies won’t be part of MCU’s continuity, it might mark the start of Olsen’s return to the franchise, potentially leading to her appearance in future live-action projects.

In the previous film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, we found Wanda sacrificing herself to protect the world from the malevolent force she harbored. She understood that the Darkhold was influencing her and thriving on her sorrow. By destroying Mount Wundagore and effectively eliminating the Darkhold – a method revealed as effective since The Book Of The Damned no longer existed when Agatha All Along debuted, it appeared that she perished in this selfless act. However, considering the negative reaction from fans, statements by Feige, and the MCU’s apparent setup for her resurgence, it seems likely that the Scarlet Witch will make a comeback in the near future.

In a similar vein to how Marvel Cinematic Universe films hint at a possible future reappearance, we can anticipate the Scarlet Witch’s comeback.

Marvel Zombies premieres on Disney Plus on October 3, 2025.
