Outlander star talks returning for season 7, part 2 after years away

As a movie critic who has spent years immersed in the intricate tapestry of historical dramas and time-traveling sagas, I can confidently say that Outlander is a masterclass in storytelling. The show’s seventh season, part 2, due to air this coming Friday, promises to be as captivating as ever.

In a couple days, the captivating series “Outlander” comes back for its second half of season 7, marking over a year since part 1 concluded. Although it may seem like we’re starting season 8 due to the extended wait, the creators have labeled it as season 7, part 2. So, let’s embrace this continuation!

Previously, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe), accompanied by Young Ian (John Bell), were heading back to Scotland. This implies that they’ll be meeting characters that viewers haven’t seen for a while, among them being Old Ian Murray, Young Ian’s father. Actor Steven Cree, who last portrayed Old Ian in season 4, spoke with the Daily Record about his experience returning to the series.

One aspect that stood out to Cree was revisiting the set. The last time he was there, he wasn’t a father yet. Now, returning and acting alongside John Bell, who portrays his on-screen son, offered a unique experience. They shared some heartwarming scenes that focused on fatherhood. As a dad myself, I can relate to the role and draw upon my own feelings as a parent to enhance my performance.

As a movie reviewer, I must say that the casting change of Jenny Murray, who was previously portrayed by Laura Donnelly, to Kristin Atherton, didn’t feel strange for me because I hadn’t filmed any scenes with Laura since season three back in 2017. Frankly, I can’t recall much about it. However, Kristin, who stepped into the role of Jenny, was simply phenomenal. In truth, my storylines in this show were mainly centered around Jamie and Claire, so I didn’t have a lot of scenes with Jenny before. But it worked out just fine.

All in all, Cree feels fortunate to have been involved with Outlander as it nears its end; the series is drawing to a close after eight seasons. “This show has taken on a life of its own for me,” he expressed. “I’ve attended numerous Outlander fan conventions throughout the years, and I can’t express enough how passionate the fans are about the cast and they wholeheartedly support every charitable cause. As such, I wanted to make sure I was available to rejoin the team.

Arch Bug is “still messing with” the Frasers in Outlander season 7, part 2

Upon reconnecting with familiar faces, Jamie and Claire are preparing to bid farewell to certain characters in the New World. This group includes Arch Bug (portrayed by Hugh Ross), a resident worker at Fraser’s Ridge, where our primary characters reside. However, the Frasers had a falling-out with Arch. An incident occurred where Arch and his wife Murdina (played by Sarah Collier) attempted to pilfer gold from Fraser’s Ridge. Unfortunately, Young Ian inadvertently fired a gunshot that took Murdina’s life. Needless to say, Arch is far from pleased about these events.

In simpler terms, Young Ian has departed to Scotland, yet Arch’s last words hinted at a desire for Ian’s swift return, which seemed menacing. Regarding Arch’s involvement in season 7, part 2 of Outlander, co-showrunner Matthew B. Roberts shared with TV Line that Arch continues to stir trouble among the Frasers, Murrays, and MacKenzies, invoking a sense of pity. Roberts describes Arch as a charming character initially, but his transformation isn’t dark. He expresses empathy towards this character, acknowledging that Arch was deeply in love with Murdina, much like Jamie and Claire are. As a result, it becomes easier to comprehend why he behaves the way he does.

I think if Jamie sat down with him and talked to him about it, Jamie would go, ‘I get it. You love her. You loved her more than anything. You feel someone took her from you.’ I mean, it’s so very relatable to our characters.

Let’s wait and find out what everyone does when Outlander comes back with fresh episodes on Starz this coming Friday, the 22nd of November.
