Blood-soaked Barry Keoghan throws punches, farms sheep and issues quietly-dangerous warnings as he stars in gripping first look at violent revenge thriller Bring Them Down
As a film enthusiast with a penchant for gritty dramas, I am genuinely intrigued by the upcoming release of “Bring Them Down”. The raw and intense performances from Barry Keoghan and Christopher Abbott, both masters of quiet yet dangerous characters, have me on the edge of my seat.
I had the pleasure of witnessing Barry Keoghan’s exceptional acting skills yet again, as he unveiled a glimpse into his latest project, the revenge thriller Bring Them Down, in its very first teaser trailer.
In the upcoming film directed by Christopher Andrews for his first time, a 32-year-old actor will share the screen with Christopher Abbott, who previously starred in Poor Things. The movie is scheduled for cinema release in February.
In a more straightforward rephrasing, here is the description of the movie:
Haunted by a dark secret from his past, Michael withdrew from society and devoted himself wholeheartedly to caring for his cherished sheep.
In my line of work as a lifestyle advisor, I’ve found myself unwittingly caught in the escalating turmoil between me and Gary, my farming counterpart, whose son Barry seems to have a knack for stirring up old grudges. As these unresolved issues resurface, they ignite a series of events that spiral out of control, taking us down a path marked by growing violence and devastation. The repercussions of this escalating feud will forever change the fabric of both our families.
The initial chilling scene depicts a growing apprehension among Barry, Christopher, and the other actors – Colm Meaney, Nora-Jane Noone, Paul Ready, and Susan Lynch – as tension escalates between them.
Accompanied by an unsettling rhythm from distant drums, the characters appear solemn, occasionally alternating with shots of a secluded farm and numerous sheep.
Demonstrating his talent for portraying subtly menacing roles, Barry delivers a chilling line to Michael: “As the saying goes, ‘Where there’s live stock, there’s dead stock.’
Scenes hinting at impending chaos are interspersed, where various characters are depicted pointing guns at one another, shouting, along with brief glimpses of a blaze and a fierce automobile collision.
At some stage, Barry is noticeable for striking Christopher’s character in the face, and Christopher appears to be damaging Barry’s car using a tire iron at that moment.
In various sequences, the Saltburn star appears heavily smeared with blood, and as the story progresses, Christopher’s character, Michael, becomes increasingly distraught, culminating in the final scene where he is lying flat on his back, screaming in terror, clearly preparing himself for a lethal attack.
Last February, Bring Them Down was shot in Ireland, where Barry stepped into the shoes of Paul Mescal, originally cast as the character Jack.
The film debuted for the first time at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, and it has also been chosen to be screened at the BFI London Film Festival in 2024.
Initially, the movie garnered acclaim for its exploration of harmful masculine ideals, culminating in grim and harsh outcomes.
Critic lauded director Christopher Andrews for his gritty, first film, which skillfully balances dark comedy with an underlying sadness.
Barry and Christopher’s acting skills were highly appreciated, as Siddhant Adlakha noted: “These two actors are captivating to behold, skillfully switching between diverse expressions while staying within a limited scope, according to who the movie portrays.
According to Mireia Mullor from Digital Spy, the movie received a rating of three stars. She mentioned that while the storyline sometimes lacked depth, it effectively tackled important themes such as generational trauma, toxic masculinity, and the struggle between tradition and modernity with striking impact, even if not always with the desired level of nuance or accuracy.
While she also singled out the lead stars for praise, writing: ‘Abbot and Keoghan are renowned masters of the quiet-but-dangerous character, so it’s no surprise that here they nail every awkward silent stare.’
In a three-star review from The Telegraph, the movie was characterized as: ‘A midway act of cruelty against a group of sheep, orchestrated by selfish bandits, results in some of the most disheartening visuals and auditory experiences seen in contemporary cinema. It’s a chilling nighttime massacre shrouded in fog, interrupted by cries of raw distress.’
According to Jordan Mintzer from The Hollywood Reporter, the movie was quite somber, making it somewhat challenging to watch, but he also noted that the intense energy beneath the plot and the outstanding performances by actors Barry and Christopher significantly improved the film.
He mentioned that Keoghan skillfully portrays Jack as a delicate young man, whose strong moral compass has been eroded over decades of poverty, seclusion, and harmful masculine ideals.
Bring Them Down will be released in cinemas in the UK and Ireland from 7 February 2025
