Daniel Craig teases next James Bond with cryptic joke at 2024 Governors Awards

As a die-hard James Bond fan with over three decades of watching and rewatching every single 007 flick, I can confidently say that the mystery surrounding who will take up the mantle after Daniel Craig hangs up his tuxedo is as thrilling as any mission Bond has ever embarked on. The suspense is palpable, the anticipation is electric, and the speculation is rampant – much like the days leading up to a new Bond film release.

At the 2024 Governors Awards, Daniel Craig hinted about the potential new James Bond by making a mysterious jest.

56-year-old actor, who starred as James Bond in five movies from 2006 to 2021, expressed his opinion during a live event at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, where he was presenting an award.

In his speech, as he presented Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson with the Irving G Thalberg Memorial Award, he hinted that the potential next James Bond might very well be present among us.

Earlier speculations hinted that Aaron-Taylor Johnson and Theo James might be considered for the renowned part.

‘Let’s just get something out of the way,’ Daniel began.

According to reports, if you were hoping to discover the new James Bond tonight, let me clarify that it’s not me, though there could potentially be a candidate among us. However, it seems I might not be the one.

As a lifestyle aficionado, I’ve shed my formal attire for more daring roles over the past three years. From a quirky Southern-accented detective solving mysteries in a whimsical setting to portraying a man navigating love amidst the challenges of 1940s Mexico City and its drug underworld, I’ve embraced the chance to explore diverse characters that push the boundaries of my craft.

In the upcoming project, he’ll be taking on the lead role, as it’s based on a novella penned by American author William Burroughs, titled “Queer.

In a more simplified and conversational tone, the story revolves around a character portrayed by the actor, who is an American named William Lee residing in Mexico City. His life takes an intriguing turn when he develops a powerful sexual attraction towards Eugene Allerton, a man previously in the navy (played by Drew Starkey).

On Monday, Daniel attended a unique film screening in San Francisco, accompanied by producer Luca Guadagnino and actress Julia Roberts.

He wore a leather bomber jacket that he teamed with a pair of quirky trousers and a cream scarf.

Actor Daniel Craig, who plays James Bond, spent several months learning dance and physical movements under the tutelage of Starkey, a character inspired by real-life figure Adelbert Lewis Marker, who struggled with drug addiction.

The two-time Golden Globe nominee shared with ET on Wednesday that there’s nothing quite as effective as dancing to break through awkwardness.

‘I believe it played multiple roles. It helped us become close friends rapidly since we were both non-dancers and we had to push through discomfort to reach a decent dance position. For us, it was quite significant.’

The movie titled “Queer” is set to premiere in selected U.S. theaters on November 27, with a UK release following on December 13. At present, it boasts an impressive 78% approval rating from 68 critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Last week, when Daniel was questioned about who should play the next James Bond, he gave a straightforward answer using just three words.

With whispers swirling about potential replacements, Daniel has openly expressed his views on the new casting choice, although his approach might come across as straightforward.

On Thursday, Variety posed a question to Daniel and his fellow cast member Drew Starkey: “Suppose you were to hand over the role of James Bond, who would be your top choice to take it on?

The question prompted a laugh from the Knives Out star as he matter-of-factly replied: ‘I Don’t Care.’

The remark follows the news that moviegoers might have to endure a five-year wait until another James Bond film appears on their screens again.

It appears that the five-year wait is due to ‘hiccups in manufacturing and casting’, because the next spy character has not been officially selected yet.

After the last screening of No Time To Die in September 2021, producer Barbara Broccoli announced that it would be another year before they began filming the next movie.

Unfortunately for James Bond enthusiasts, it appears that the movie may take a considerable amount of time to be released, as filming has yet to commence.

In June of 2022, Barbara stated that there is currently no script available for the upcoming film since they haven’t yet determined their approach as this new project represents a fresh take on the Bond character.

‘We’re redefining his identity, which requires patience. I estimate that the shooting won’t start for at least another two years.’
