Cynthia Erivo claps back after Dax Shepard asks 'annoying' question about how she 'wipes' with long nails

As a woman who has spent years in the entertainment industry and navigated the often-unpredictable world of celebrity interviews, I can’t help but appreciate Cynthia Erivo‘s unflappable grace in handling Dax Shepard’s peculiar line of questioning about her long nails. It’s a testament to her resilience and professionalism that she handled the situation with humor and poise, reminding us all that even the most mundane aspects of our lives can become fodder for intrigue in the spotlight.

Cynthia Erivo expressed her irritation over being asked about her long fingernails, following Dax Shepard’s question whether her acrylic nails pose any issues while using the restroom.

On his Armchair Expert podcast, the 37-year-old celebrity known as The Wicked star posed an unusually bold and impolite query during their conversation on Monday.

In a casual conversation, Shepard, who is 49 years old, started by saying something along the lines of ‘During the process of cleaning yourself…,’ at which point Cynthia anticipated the topic and remarked, ‘I could tell that was the direction your question would take.’

The actress explained, “People don’t clean themselves with only their hands, right? They use tissues, don’t they? That’s how it works!

Shepard persisted in investigating the star’s habit for gripping toilet paper and if she prefers using her fingernail tips.

At the UK debut of Wicked on Monday, Cynthia explained, stating that she usually touches things with her “finger pads” before mentioning, “I consider myself a mature individual.

Shepard continued probing further, inquiring whether she ever experiences a slight sensation similar to nails gently touching a crevice.

‘No, because the tissue is there!’ Cynthia responded.

Upon Shepard inquiring if I took offense to the query, I admitted I found it bothersome. I responded with a casual, “Really now, folks?” However, I understand where they’re coming from, but it also felt like, “I’m an independent adult, and I’ve never emanated that particular scent, if you catch my drift…

She mentioned, “It’s important to consider that some individuals don’t have fingernails, so they need to find alternative ways to ensure they’re cleaning effectively.

Cynthia also joked that other people have asked her how she gets anything done with her nails.

‘And I’m like, “I mean, I’m here! I’m dressed.”‘

During her tour promoting Wicked with co-star Ariana Grande, the star’s striking fingernails have taken center stage.

Both have been channeling their onscreen characters, Elphaba and Grande, with their nail designs.

During the promotional phase, the two film stars offered apologies for the emotional outbursts they experienced while discussing their friendship and the movie, which seemed to bring many tears to their eyes.

In a video posted by E! News, Ariana Grande, aged 31, was overheard saying, ‘I’ve shed tears about 500 times today, and I feel compelled to share this as a public service announcement. My apologies.’

‘It is what it is,’ her British-born co-star added. ‘There’s just nothing we can do about it.’

In the interview, seated alongside Erivo, Grande retorted, ” frankly, I can hardly fathom it, and let me tell you something – if you’re going to chime in with criticism about this, I’ll beat you to it.” She added, “I’ve already expressed my frustration. I’m drained. I’m emotionally exhausted. My emotions are so raw they could bring tears to my eyes.

‘We’ve come through a massive, massive thing and we’ve really stuck together,’ Erivo explained.

In the United States, the first part of Wicked, titled “Wicked: Part One”, is set to debut in movie theaters on November 22. The second installment, “Wicked Part Two”, will follow a year later, making its premiere at cinemas on November 21, 2025.
