Warm up your voice for a Christmas release of sing-along Wicked!
As a seasoned theater enthusiast with a background in choral performance and a soft spot for musicals, I eagerly await the release of the Wicked film this coming November 2024. My memories of belting out “Defying Gravity” with my fellow choir members at Brigham Young University still resonate, and I can’t help but feel a twinge of excitement at the prospect of an interactive sing-along experience.
As a music-loving gamer, I can’t help but find myself humming or belting out tunes from new musical movies for months on end. Remember when everyone was singing “Let it Go” and “Love is an Open Door” from Frozen? Or more recently, have you heard someone crooning “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from Encanto? If you’re one of those who tried to resist joining in during Les Miserables’ “One Day More,” then here’s some good news! Starting this Christmas, theaters will be screening the upcoming Wicked movie, giving us all a chance to let our Broadway voices shine.
“Come with me to the Emerald City”
As reported exclusively by Variety, moviegoers are given the opportunity to express their inner Glinda or Elphaba during sing-along showings of “Wicked.” However, they must be patient for now. According to Rebecca Rubin, audiences can join in singing popular numbers like ‘Popular’ and ‘Defying Gravity,’ but should beware that it might come at a risk! On the other hand, fans will have to wait until the second movie before they can harmonize with Act 2 favorites such as ‘For Good’ and ‘No Good Deed.’
It makes complete sense if you prefer not to watch a traditional musical with an inexperienced chorus, especially when you are experiencing the music for the first time and wish for uninterrupted listening. Perhaps, you’re eagerly anticipating the unique charm of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s collaboration on music that has been dear to you over the years. It could simply not appeal to your taste if the musical experience is interactive.
Rest assured, for now, it’s planned to debut the interactive shows in approximately 1,000 cinemas spread across North America. However, details like the specific theater counts and exact screening times are still under discussion.
I’m looking for a performance time close by. When I was part of Brigham Young University’s Women’s Chorus, we showcased three songs from a musical during our autumn concerts. During rehearsals, our conductor paused one day to let us perform “Defying Gravity” as we did when practicing privately. With 170 unique voices, it was a beautiful and chaotic experience for all of us. Afterward, we set aside our inner Elphaba and focused on the music, ensuring precision, rhythm, and harmony. I fondly remember those 170 renditions of “Defying Gravity,” and I can’t wait to be in an audience filled with fans, enjoying the music together.
The interactive showings may not be for all audiences but it would be a wonderful thing to hear how people connect with such favorites as “I’m Not That Girl” and “The Wizard and I.”
Wicked can be enjoyed on the big screen as of November 22, 2024.
