Everyone at the BBC was surprised and upset on Monday when Scott Mills unexpectedly left his popular breakfast show on Radio 2.
The controversy over his dismissal, which BBC executives announced the next day, continues to escalate.
Mills celebrated his 53rd birthday on Saturday by spending a quiet day with his mother at her home in the countryside of Sussex, according to reports.
According to reports, Mills left on a train to Mayfield shortly after losing his job. He’s known to be very close to his mother, Sandra, who has multiple sclerosis and separated from his father when Scott was a teenager.
The presenter has reportedly returned to London after being seen by a passerby. The witness described him as appearing subdued and said he wasn’t disturbed by anyone, likely because it wasn’t a busy time – around 4pm. The witness speculated he was probably returning from visiting his mother.
BBC staff are reportedly shocked and upset by the sudden exit of a presenter once nicknamed ‘radio’s Cristiano Ronaldo,’ as he apparently left without saying goodbye.
One employee told me: ‘There are a lot of hurting people here. He was very popular.’
Executives were ‘obsessed with him’ according to one insider and treated him ‘like royalty’.
The BBC knew about a police investigation into Mills starting in 2017, but continued to support and promote him despite this.
Police in Hampshire received reports in 2016 about alleged sexual offences involving Mills and a boy under 16. They recorded the details and shared the information with the Metropolitan Police, who then took over the investigation.
Police questioned Mills regarding the allegations in that year, but prosecutors determined there wasn’t enough proof to pursue charges and closed the case in 2019. Despite knowing he had been interviewed as part of the investigation between 2018 and 2019, Mills continued to appear on television.
The BBC hasn’t given a specific reason for his dismissal, only stating that it involved issues with his personal behavior.
Friends of Mills are shocked by the recent allegations and feel hurt that he didn’t confide in them. One friend expressed their disappointment, saying they feel blindsided and unsure about the future of their friendship. They wish he would explain what’s been happening, especially since he always presented himself as a kind and genuine person. Discovering this has been deeply upsetting and feels like a betrayal.
That sense of shock is being echoed across media circles.
For many years, Megan Carver played a key role in Mills’ career. She used to produce shows for Radio 1, then started her own PR firm, Carver PR. Her clients now include Rylan Clark, who previously worked with Mills hosting Eurovision.
She started by working alongside Mills at the radio station, and later became his publicist. In this role, she helped build his public image as his career grew to include television appearances.
Carver recently parted ways with his previous DJ and is now signed with Big Red Talent, the agency that also represents radio personalities Chris Stark and Charlie Sloth.
One thing is sure: Mills will need their help as long as this scandal shows no sign of going away.
