Betty White postage stamp to be released in 2025: 'An icon of American television'

As a follower who has grown up watching the captivating performances of Betty White, I can wholeheartedly say that this postage stamp is a fitting tribute to a legend whose wit and charm graced our screens for over seven decades. From her iconic roles in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Golden Girls” to her timeless contributions to the world of television, Betty White was more than just an actor; she was a beacon of light that brought joy and laughter into countless lives.

Betty White, who passed away in 2021 following a long and illustrious career on TV, is set to receive a commemorative postage stamp in 2025, as announced by the US Postal Service last Friday.

The design of the stamp originates from a 2010 photo taken by Kwaku Alston, and it was skillfully created by Greg Breeding, who serves as an art director within the postal service.

In a statement, they noted that Betty White, who graced American television screens from 1922 to 2021, was known for her humor and kindness on screen. For over seven decades, she entertained viewers through shows like ‘The Golden Girls’ and ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’. Beyond her acting, she was deeply admired as a loving animal advocate.

The Postal Service has shared that their 2025 stamp collection will be incomplete initially, with more stamps to be unveiled at a future time. Among the stamps revealed on Friday were a Keith Haring print, a tribute to Allen Toussaint, the New Orleans R&B legend, and the latest addition to the Lunar New Year series.

Betty White initially started her career in radio broadcasting, but shifted gears to television in 1949, where she co-hosted Al Jarvis’ variety program. She later became the full-time host of this show. Over the years, White hosted multiple programs under the title “The Betty White Show”, with the first being a variety show in 1958 and the last being a sitcom from 1977 to 1978.

1973 marked the beginning of Betty White’s portrayal of two iconic characters: Sue Ann Nivens, the “Happy Homemaker,” on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” She joined the show halfway through its run and continued until it concluded in 1977.

In the following years, she landed a breakthrough part, portraying Rose Nylund, one of the four housemates in “The Golden Girls” set in Miami. This series remained among the top 10 most-watched shows by Nielsen for an impressive five-year period.

Initially, she was chosen to portray man-loving Blanche Devereaux, a role eventually played by Rue McClanahan. However, Jay Sandrich, the experienced director of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” who oversaw the pilot, had concerns that viewers might perceive her as just another version of Sue Ann, which she expressed to The Times in 2009.

In her later years, White made an appearance in a Super Bowl advertisement, took on the role as host for “Saturday Night Live”, and gained popularity among younger audiences through social media platforms.

In a conversation with The Times back in 2010, White expressed that it’s quite absurd for someone of his age to be dealing with all this chaos, but he’s thoroughly enjoying it.

After White passed away in 2021, a documentary honoring her career was screened in theaters on what would have been her 100th birthday. Titled “Betty White: A Tribute”, it showcased behind-the-scenes clips from various acting roles throughout her life and excerpts from her last recorded interview.

In the documentary, a number of White’s famous acquaintances made appearances, such as Tina Fey and Morgan Freeman. Ryan Reynolds, who playfully referred to her as his “former girlfriend” following their acting partnership in the 2009 film “The Proposal,” was among those featured as well.
