Mariah May's title run will hopefully get a spark at AEW Full Gear 2024

As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the world of wrestling simulations, I must say that Mariah May’s storyline in AEW has been a rollercoaster ride, much like the one I experienced when my character finally managed to dethrone the champion in my favorite game, only to find the ensuing title defense matches lacked the thrill and anticipation I had hoped for.

Mariah May’s journey in All Elite Wrestling has been captivating, as she initially served as Toni Storm’s assistant, secretly scheming to dethrone the AEW Women’s World Champion. She succeeded in doing so at AEW All In. However, her title defense since then hasn’t been impressive, appearing more like a stalemate. This status quo may be broken at the upcoming AEW Full Gear event.

At Full Gear, May won’t have a match; instead, she and Mina Shirakawa will celebrate May’s past victory with a “Champagne Celebration”. This event promises to be enjoyable, but it leaves the stage open for Toni Storm to potentially re-enter AEW.

Since August 25, Storm has been absent from AEW. However, she’s made appearances in STARDOM and CMLL during this time. In Japan, Storm and Shirakawi have grown close, leading to Shirakawa expressing concerns about May’s conduct. The situation seems ripe for Storm to reappear and leave May to face the fallout of her actions, with Shirakawa possibly departing.

This upcoming event promises to be thrilling for fans, who are eagerly anticipating it. Yet, the three-month gap between securing the title and now seems overly extended. She’s successfully defended her title five times since then, which is quite frequent. However, none of these matches have carried significant weight. In truth, only one has been aired on pay-per-view; that was her battle against Willow Nightingale at AEW WrestleDream 2024.

It’s not May’s fault at all; it was evident that Toni Storm’s comeback and quest for revenge would be a significant aspect of this storyline. Given her long-standing contribution to AEW, it seems unreasonable for Storm to simply disappear after losing the title. The logical progression in this narrative is for Storm to attack May with the intensity of a thousand storms, which aligns with what we expect next.

Alliance of Extraordinary Wrestling (AEW) is still grappling with issues regarding the scheduling of its women’s division. This division had been gathering momentum a few months ago, but it seems to have returned to the booking difficulties it encountered earlier in AEW’s growth. For instance, during WrestleDream and All Out events, there was only one women’s match on the main program. If the entire division were receiving stronger scheduling, Mariah May’s title reign would be among them, unfortunately, that’s not the current situation.

In the world of All Elite Wrestling, Mariah May stands out as one of the most fully-realized characters. Fans have been intently following her strategic attempts to dethrone Toni Storm. It seems this narrative is looping back as we approach AEW Full Gear, which could potentially reignite her title chase and invigorate the division too.
