3 cool callbacks in Star Trek: Lower Decks' 'Starbase 80?!'

As a long-time Star Trek enthusiast who can recite lines from every series like they were my own mantras, I must say that this week’s Lower Decks episode was a delightful journey down memory lane. I found myself grinning ear to ear at the clever references and callbacks that paid homage to the rich history of Star Trek.

Last week, Lower Decks from Star Trek released their fifth episode in its last season. Titled “Starbase 80?!”, this episode delves into the enigmatic starbase that has been frequently mentioned but never before seen. This is the episode that takes us to the long-awaited starbase, accompanied by a collection of intriguing callbacks and nods to earlier stories.

Instead of potentially relying too heavily on references to earlier Star Trek shows and movies, Lower Decks offers a delightful challenge for fans who enjoy spotting these subtle nods. This time around, we decided to highlight our top three favorite references or callbacks featured in the latest episode.

El Aurian

The El Aurians are one of Star Trek’s most enigmatic alien species. Known as sworn adversaries of the Q, they possessed enough power to catch the attention of the Q Continuum but weren’t strong enough to stand against the Borg. This makes them a source of many questions due to their capabilities. They’re seldom encountered these days, and when we do encounter them, it feels like a nostalgic reference, just as we experienced this week.

The Enterprise Uniforms

Star Trek: Enterprise has a sweet spot in my heart. The actors, the sets, the music. It’s all so wonderful. The one thing people are split on (besides the theme song) is the uniforms. They’re blue with their respective designation colors used as trim. They’re not bad, but not great. We haven’t seen them too much since the show ended, so seeing them pop up in this episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks was a neat treat.

A Piece of the Action

Quickly, in a fleeting appearance, the hats worn by Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock from the iconic Star Trek: The Original Series episode “A Piece of the Action” can be spotted inside one of the shops. In this episode, the USS Enterprise lands on a planet that mirrors the 1920s atmosphere of Earth, complete with its gangs, firearms, and characteristic style.
