As a reviewer, I’ve seen Prime Video score some instant wins with big adaptations like The Rings of Power, Fallout, and Invincible – those dedicated fanbases were clearly hungry for them! But what’s really interesting is how Bosch quietly became a huge success for them. Based on Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch novels, it was one of Prime’s very first original series, launching way back in 2015 with Titus Welliver in the lead. It didn’t explode overnight, but it steadily built a massive following, proving that a good, solid story can really resonate with viewers.
The popular show Bosch finished its run in 2021 after seven seasons, but Titus Welliver quickly returned as the detective in the spin-off Bosch: Legacy, which lasted three seasons. While he’s now appearing in another spin-off, Ballard, his role is smaller, and it hasn’t quite satisfied fans who miss seeing him as the lead. However, Welliver recently told Screen Rant that discussions about continuing Bosch: Legacy are still ongoing, offering hope for more episodes.
We’ve definitely talked about potential future projects – Connelly, Henrik Bastin, and I have all been brainstorming – but nothing is confirmed yet. Right now, they’re really focused on getting ‘Start of Watch’ finished, and I’m really looking forward to seeing it – I’m thrilled for everyone working on it.
As a fan, I’m really curious to see what happens with Bosch! It seems like the future of the whole universe depends on how well the new spin-offs, Ballard and Start of Watch, do. If they’re popular, Prime Video could really lean into those stories, or even bring Legacy back. But if those don’t quite catch on, they might decide to focus on more of what we already love with Legacy. It’s all up in the air, and I’m excited to see what happens!
One reason the original series lasted so long was its cost-effectiveness. Unlike many other shows in the crime genre that spent a lot on elaborate production, Bosch focused on a classic detective story—Welliver’s character investigating puzzling deaths. By prioritizing a strong story over big-name stars and their high salaries, the show could consistently produce new seasons.
Although Bosch: Legacy wasn’t the most expensive show on the streaming service, it was reportedly canceled after three seasons because it was becoming too expensive to produce alongside the spin-off Ballard and the prequel Bosch: Start of Watch. Despite the costs, almost every season of every Bosch show has received perfect scores from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. While the series hasn’t won any major awards, maintaining that level of consistent quality is incredibly rare for any TV show.
