Rachel Zegler's anti-Trump comments are the final nail in the coffin for Disney's Snow White movie

As someone who has spent decades immersed in the world of cinema and entertainment, I must say that I’ve seldom encountered a situation quite like Disney’s live-action Snow White. Rachel Zegler, our titular princess, seems to have stepped into a quagmire with her recent controversial remarks.

Throughout my career spanning various movies and entertainment sectors, I can’t recall a film being negatively impacted by a single actor as severely as Disney’s live-action Snow White. The actress, Rachel Zegler, who embodies the leading character in the forthcoming live-action retelling, has found herself in numerous awkward situations repeatedly, which has led many to dismiss the movie even before its release.

Following her recent outburst, I’m not confident that any efforts by Disney’s public relations team or the film’s co-stars could salvage its reputation now.

For individuals yet to fully immerse themselves in the recent events, Zegler expressed her dismay on social media after the November 5th elections, stating that she was left speechless at the prospect of “four more years of intolerance.

However, it wasn’t so much what she specifically stated regarding Trump that sparked outrage. After all, many celebrities have voiced their anger or displeasure towards Donald Trump, and we’ve grown accustomed to such expressions by now. The real source of upset seems to be the comments she made about his supporters, numbering around 76 million in the U.S., as per the results from the 2024 election.

In her extended series of posts, Zegler expressed a hope that neither Trump nor his followers would ever experience tranquility. She criticized those who voted for him, labeling their decision as a severe and profound illness.

She expressed that it’s alarming how many people support the teachings of this man, as they are blindly following: a misguided notion of safety, strength, identity, national pride, and compassion. There’s no guidance or advice to be found in any of these aspects.

Big yikes.

It’s clear that Zegler has the right to her political views. I won’t pass judgment on her for that. However, it’s worth noting that a large number of Trump voters – potentially millions – might not see eye-to-eye with her.

In a personal perspective as an ardent admirer, I must admit that Disney’s upcoming movie adaptation of Snow White seems to be encountering a significant challenge in terms of audience appeal, largely due to earlier statements made by Halle Bailey about the film’s narrative and its contemporary twist. In various interviews, she has underlined that romance isn’t the focal point of this new version, even going as far as humorously suggesting that her co-star Andrew Burnap’s scenes as Prince Charming might be eliminated from the final cut. This departure from tradition has left many fans of the original animated masterpiece feeling rather apprehensive.

Now, let’s discuss Zegler’s criticism of Trump. It’s important to note that she’s far from the only one with these sentiments. I’m not implying that her feelings aren’t valid, quite the contrary. There are numerous young women nationwide who share her anxiety right now.

However, it’s clear that 76 million individuals cast their votes for Donald Trump. Given that a film with an estimated production cost of over $250 million can’t disregard half the population, it might be why Zegler has tried to retract her remarks.

In a recent social media post, Zegler expressed regret and offered an apology for the election-related post he shared on Instagram a week ago. He acknowledged that his feelings had led him astray.

She acknowledged that bitterness and resentment have driven us apart from harmony and enlightenment, expressing regret for her part in fueling the negative conversation. However, she pledged to actively work towards promoting a more harmonious future.

To put it straightforwardly, it’s quite obvious that this situation smacks of Disney’s public relations strategy. They seem to be trying to mend things by making Zegler apologize for her remarks, but the harm has likely been inflicted already. I have my doubts that any conservative Trump supporters are now considering watching Snow White, given their stance, and it’s possible that many were already planning to boycott it due to her earlier statements about the movie.

Given the significant financial stakes tied to Disney’s Snow White, it’s not surprising that Disney’s PR team has become more active in managing Halle Bailey’s social media controversies. It wouldn’t shock me if Disney eventually includes a provision in their actors’ contracts that restricts them from expressing strong opinions on controversial political matters.
