Disney released a movie with some of this year's most cringe-inducing body horror

As a long-time fan of both horror and Marvel movies, I must say that the unexpected body horror moments in Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine was a delightful surprise! Emma Corrin’s chilling portrayal of Cassandra Nova is something you don’t usually see in a Marvel film, and her bio-phasing powers made for some truly unsettling scenes.

Without a doubt, Coralie Fargeat’s visually striking and gruesome film The Substance rules the roost as the undisputed queen of body horror in 2024 (and possibly the entire decade), but it’s worth mentioning that another movie from Disney left some audiences quite uneasy. I’m referring to Marvel’s adult-rated team-up film Deadpool & Wolverine.

The Deadpool series, along with the X-Men as a whole, have a penchant for gruesome body horror – it’s something they are quite accustomed to, particularly when it comes to Deadpool. Previous Deadpool films and Logan were filled with intense gore and violence due to extensive fight scenes and heavy bloodshed. However, in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, there is plenty of action, but what truly caught my attention was the chilling villain, Cassandra Nova, portrayed by Emma Corrin, who gives off a vibe reminiscent of a horror movie antagonist.

In this movie, Charles Xavier’s twin sister, named Nova, assumes the position of the main antagonist. She resides in a vague area between dimensions known as The Void, which is where our main characters initially encounter her for the first time. Corrin delivers an impressive performance as an actor, with their cold-eyed and ruthless portrayal in this film leaving a lasting impact, particularly for Marvel films, where villains aren’t always portrayed as powerfully as in this case.

As a devoted fan, what truly captivated me was Nova’s unique manifestation of powers. Similar to her brother, she possesses psionic abilities, yet unlike Charles Xavier, her power doesn’t involve telepathy. Instead, she has this extraordinary ability called bio-phasing, which allows her to physically penetrate individuals, as depicted in various scenes throughout the movie. Specifically, Nova is shown inserting her fingers into brains – yes, you heard it right! This includes Deadpool, Wolverine, and Paradox.

Marvel has shared a making-of video, revealing the process by which their visual effects team crafted certain effects. For those who haven’t seen the movie already, there are brief glimpses of what these scenes will look like in the final cut.

As a gamer, I must admit, there’s an unsettling, squirm-worthy vibe when Matthew Macfadyen’s character’s fingers seem to burrow beneath his skin and emerge from his eye sockets – without a drop of blood. Strange as it may sound, the lack of violence somehow intensifies the eerie atmosphere. It’s the kind of scene that makes your stomach knot up, thinking about something similar happening to me. It’s not every day we witness such disturbing effects in a Marvel movie, but for a villain as chilling as Cassandra Nova, it feels just right.

While “Deadpool & Wolverine” isn’t a horror movie per se, there are parts that could resonate with horror genre enthusiasts. Being the first R-rated film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it doesn’t shy away from graphic violence and intense action sequences.
