As a dedicated fan of James Patterson’s works and a long-time follower of Alex Cross’ thrilling journey, I must say that my anticipation for this new adaptation was palpable. With Morgan Freeman and Tyler Perry bringing the character to life on the big screen in the past, I had high hopes for Aldis Hodge stepping into the role on Prime Video’s “Cross.

First introduced by James Patterson in his inaugural novel “Along Came A Spider“, published in 1993, Alex Cross has risen to become one of the most celebrated fictional heroes. To date, Patterson has penned more than 30 novels centered around this remarkable detective, who excels in pursuing and apprehending a wide range of criminals, from serial killers to government conspirators, by leveraging his keen understanding of criminal minds for an advantage.

The character previously appeared in movies like “Spider” and “Kiss the Girls,” portrayed by Morgan Freeman, and “Alex Cross” from 2012, starring Tyler Perry. Now, Aldis Hodge is taking on the role in a new series for Prime Video, where his character, Alex Cross, is coping with the murder of his wife while pursuing a new killer.

The show offers a unique, non-Patterson-novel inspired narrative that presents an enticing and atmospheric twist on its subject matter. Generally speaking, we found the initial season to be exceptional! However, one might wonder if critics find it worthy of viewing.

What are critics saying about Cross?

At present, the show has earned a Rotten Tomatoes critic rating of 69%, based on 16 reviews. As it recently debuted, there are currently no audience ratings available.

The general agreement among reviewers is that the storyline of “Cross” isn’t completely wrapped up, but Aldis Hodge’s powerful portrayal stands out as one of the best representations yet of James Patterson’s character. While many reviews don’t go over-the-top with their compliments, they do acknowledge Hodge’s exceptional performance in the role. And we must say, he truly delivers a remarkable performance!

In terms of opinions from other networks, there have been a blend of positive and negative assessments regarding the show. Aramide Tinbu from Variety was particularly enthusiastic, praising “Cross” as a crime drama filled with unexpected twists, stating that with Hodge as the lead character and Watkins directing, it offers numerous stunning surprises. Essentially, this detective series sensitively tackles themes like grief, harmful masculinity, and the dangers of fixations.

While Daniel Fienberg from The Hollywood Reporter acknowledges that the central character played by Hodge effectively maintains the drama engaging, he also notes that the content surrounding him is problematic, excessively sensational, and undeniably primed for success.

As a gamer, I’ve encountered some mixed reviews about this show. Nick Schager from The Daily Beast seemed a bit disappointed, stating that it’s hindered by the same stretched-out pacing that’s all too common in today’s TV series. On the other hand, Liam Matthews from TV Guide found it a tad lackluster, claiming it opts for safe decisions instead of taking risks and offering something more intriguing.

As of yet, the audience score isn’t in, so it’s hard to tell how viewers feel on the show. There’s so many times where a Rotten Tomatoes score and critic reviews aren’t good, but viewers think the opposite. And really at the end of the day, I think it’s the audience’s opinion that matters the most. They’re the ones who provide the views after all. As it stands, it appears the series may be good but not great according to RT and some critics, yet still watchable for Hodge and worth checking out for fans of cop thrillers. What did you think?
