Although Disney has scheduled release dates for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, those dates could be adjusted.
Since Avatar: Fire and Ash came out last December, many people have wondered what’s next for the Avatar series. Director James Cameron has even said that Avatar 4 and 5 might not happen if the third movie doesn’t perform well at the box office.
Despite some uncertainty, producer Rae Sanchini told Inverse that work on the next two Avatar movies is continuing quickly. She also mentioned that the planned release dates for 2029 and 2031 are not yet final and could change.
I’m really hoping things come together soon! The producers are finalizing the filming plans and budgets right now, and that’s going to decide if the release dates we’re expecting will actually happen, or if Disney will have to push the sequels back. It’s a bit nerve-wracking, but I’m staying optimistic!
We’re currently developing the schedule and working through the budgeting and planning stages to create a new process for them. We’re making good progress and moving forward quickly.
Sanchini shared that the finished scripts for Avatar 4 and 5 are excellent, and she believes production is moving ahead as planned.
“We have the scripts, they’re brilliant. As far as I’m concerned, we’re heading forward.”
Having directed iconic films like The Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, and Titanic, Cameron then began working on a new project. This story would use cutting-edge 3D technology to fully realize his creative vision for the big screen.
Released in 2009, the first Avatar became the highest-grossing movie of all time, earning nearly $3 billion worldwide. It even surpassed director James Cameron’s earlier hit, Titanic. Critics generally liked the film, giving it an 81% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
After 13 years in the making, The Way of Water finally hit theaters and became a huge commercial success, earning $2.3 billion worldwide. This pushed it past Titanic to become the third highest-grossing film of all time, following Avatar and Avengers: Endgame.
James Cameron filmed Avatar: The Way of Water at the same time as Avatar: Fire and Ash to shorten the wait for fans. Avatar: Fire and Ash, released last December, has already made $1.4 billion worldwide.
Although most movies would celebrate a box office result like that, the decreasing success of the Avatar series led to a lot of debate about whether Disney could still afford to make these expensive films.
Despite having the highest production cost of any Avatar film—around $400 million—Fire and Ash has performed the worst at the box office so far. James Cameron even considered wrapping up the series after just three movies, even though he had already begun filming scenes for Avatar 4.
Just a month ago, the director hinted he was likely to get approval to proceed with the project, and Sanchini recently told ScreenRant that filming for Avatar 4 could start soon.
Even though the next two Avatar movies aren’t out for a while, fans can now enjoy Avatar: Fire and Ash at home. It’s currently available digitally, and will be released on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD on May 19th.
While Disney+ hasn’t announced a release date yet, the previous film, The Way of Water, became available on the service around six months after it was in theaters – it arrived in June 2023.
The fourth Avatar movie is scheduled to come out on December 21, 2029, and the fifth will follow on December 19, 2031.
